Paul Méfano
Paul Méfano is a Compositeur French, born with Bassora (Iraq), the March 6th 1937. Its formation is supplemented with Basle with Pierre Boulez, Karlheinz Stockhausen and Henri Pousseur, then in Paris in the class of Olivier Messiaen.
Paul Méfano is the example of an unclassable type-setter and with difficulty appréhendable by criticism although definitely resulting from the post-serial music. Of Incidence for orchestra (1960) with Speed for trumpet (2000), its writing evolved to détempérés universes, tending towards the inexpressible thresholds of the subconscious. Founder of the unit 2E2M (1972) and leader, it took an active part in the musical life, discovered and support of many type-setters like Jean Barraqué, Brian Ferneyhough, Franco Donatoni, Luigi Nono, Aldo Clementi, Philippe Boesmans, Morton Feldman, Edison Denisov, John Cage… and in the young generation Stephan de Gérando, Laurent Martin, Thierry Blondeau, Marc André, Michael Finissy, James Dillon, Bruce Mather, Claude Lefèvre… Paul Méfano is first has to have created an opening on China, Arménie, Israel, Japan, the Arab world; in addition redécouvrant personalities like Charles Valentine Alkan and the off-set Czech type-setters with Terezienstadt in 1940. In load of a class of composition and orchestration to the CNSMDP, its influence was mainly inciting and destabilisatrice by refusing the momentary modes.
Of 1966 with 1968, it remains with the the United States, then in 1969, it is with Berlin.
In 1970, returned to France, it composes, then in 1972, it creates the Ensemble 2e2m that it directs and with which it records forty discs.
Of 1972 with 1988, he is director of the Academy of Champigny-sur-Marne, then professor (composition and orchestration) with the Academy of Paris until in 2002.
