Paul Hankar
Paul Hankar , Architect and Belgian designer born the December 11th 1859 with Frameries and dead the January 17th 1901 with Brussels, was one of the principal representatives of the Art nouveau with Brussels.
After a training of sculptor, he studied with the Académie of the Art schools of Brussels where he meets Victor Horta with which he binds friendship before becoming one of its competitors. He also studied the technique of the wrought iron which he will use in the majority of his projects. At the time of the World Fair of 1897 to Brussels, it was charged with Henry Van de Velde, Gustave Metal worker-Bovy and Georges Hobé to conceive the Congolese Exposure where the new style Art nouveau is expressed with strength. In 1888, it began its activity from architect and of creator of pieces of furniture in Brussels and it collaborated with Adolphe Crespin, decorator of interior and specialist in the Sgraffite S. In 1893, it built its own house, which is regarded as the first building Art nouveau in Brussels at the same time as Hôtel Tassel celebrates it built by Victor Horta.
In 1896, it worked out the project of the “City of the Artists” for the seaside resort of Westende, a co-operative of artists who would have residences and workshops there. Although this project never was born, it inspired the artists of Künsterkolonie of Darmstadt and the Sécession Viennese. The following year, it takes part in the colonial exposure of Tervuren for which it is responsible for the coordination of work of the various craftsmen or manufacturers of pieces of furniture.
The majority of its constructions are in Brussels among which the house Zegers-Regnard (1895), the house and pharmacy Peeters (1896), the Renkin hotel, (1897, disappeared today), the hotel Ciamberlani (1897), the house of the painter Rene Janssens (1898), the hotel Kleyer (1898), the house-workshop Bartholomé (1898, disappeared today), shirt manufacture Niguet (1899). He is also the author of Palacio de Chávarri with Bilbao, built for the business man Víctor Chávarri in 1889.
Its tomb is with the Cimetière of Dieweg (with Uccle, a commune of Brussels).
