Paul Ehrenfest

Paul Ehrenfest (January 18th 1880 with Vienna - September 25th 1933 in Amsterdam) is a Physicien Austrian theorist .

Biography

He studies in Technische Hochschule of Vienna as from October 1899, where he follows the courses of Boltzmann on the “mechanical theory of heat”, our current kinetic Théorie of the gases.

In 1901, he studies in Göttingen, where he follows the courses of Klein and Hilbert in mathematics, of Abraham in electromagnetism, like those of Stark, Nernst, Schwarzschild and Zermelo. He also meets there his future wife, the Russian mathematician Tatyana Alexeyevna Afanasyeva, with which he will write in 1911 a famous article on the bases of the Mécanique statistics.

He supports his thesis, the movement of the rigid bodies in the fluids and the mechanics of Hertz , under the supervision of Boltzmann, on June 23rd, 1904 in Vienna.

He succeeds Lorentz with the pulpit of theoretical physics of the Université of Leyde.
