Paul Dolden

Paul Dolden (January 23rd 1956, Ottawa, Canada) is a type-setter of Musique electroacoustic resident with Montreal, Canada.

Paul Dolden begins his career at the 16 years age as electric guitarist, violonist and violoncellist professionals. Inspired by the creative possibilities inherent in technologies of recording, Paul Dolden turns to contemporary modes of production and diffusion in his artistic step. At 29 years, it gains the first of a score of international prizes which establish it as type-setter. The music of Dolden received and continuous to receive from many people, both in Europe and in North America, an enthusiastic reception.

Throughout a career extending on more than 25 years, Paul Dolden improved a single artistic step using audio technology like platform for launching or capturing differently imperceptible musical performances. In this way, it makes of its computer a virtual orchestra which it handles with as much sensitivity than if it were about a traditional orchestra. Its compositions are characterized by a maximum esthetics in which numerical hundreds of recordings of instrumental and vocal performances are combined in multiple layers.

The music of Paul Dolden was described like the “missing link” between the jazz, the rock'n'roll and the great traditional concert. Some critical called it “music of the data-processing era combining noise, complexity and beauty in a search of excess”, others of “apocalyptic hypermodernism”.

The first œ works employed a unified approach of variations of stamps and harmony. Under the influence of the postmodernism, Paul Dolden thereafter included a juxtaposition and an overtaxation of heterogeneous musical styles as testifies the œ works to them to the Resonance Cycles (Cycle resonance, 1992-96). Always working to exceed itself, Dolden intensely continued during the last years, in the Twilight Cycle (Cycle of twilight nebula), the investigation of the forbidden fruits of the new modern music … the melody and the rates/rhythms of dances.
