Paul Dessau is a type-setter and German leader born the December 19th 1894 with Hamburg (Germany), deceased the June 28th 1979 with Königs Wusterhausen (the Federal Republic of Germany).

Biography

After the Great War, it occupied of the posts of head of orchestra in Hamburg, Cologne, Mainz and Berlin, while composing a music of avant-garde in particular for the cinema.

Engaged on the left and of Jewish origin, it left Germany since 1933 for France, then the United States, before returning to Europe after the War and fixing themselves at East Berlin. He collaborated then with Bertolt Brecht for the incidental musics of Mère courage and the Cercle of Caucasian chalk .

Initially attracted by the dodecaphonic music, it of it is distant to stick to a realistic music, readily committed and accessible to the greatest number.

Parallel to the composition of works for the cinema and the theater, he wrote works choral societies ( In memoriam Bertolt Brecht , Requiem for Lumumba , Lénine ) and of the operas ( Lancelot , Einstein ).
