Paul Chaudet

Paul Chaudet (November 17th 1904 with Rivaz - August 7th 1977) is a politician Suisse, originating in Corsier-sur-Vevey which was federal adviser of 1954 with 1973 and member of the radical-democratic Parti.

Studies and career

Formed at the cantonal School of agriculture of Lausanne, it is Vigneron of trade.

It achieves the traditional political course while being initially syndic (mayor) of Rivaz, small town of the canton of Vaud at the edge of the Lac Léman.

He is appointed with the Grand the Council of Vaud of 1937 with 1942 then member of the National council as of 1943. He is opposed successfully to the tax on the wines and fights for the initiative for the return to the direct democracy, launched by the Ligue of Vaud, a movement traditionalist of right-hand side.

To advise State

In 1946, it is elected with the Council of State of the canton of Vaud, initially in load of Justice and the Police force during two years. Then, of 1948 with 1954, of the department of Agriculture, Industry and the Trade. He was member of the bodies of the Swiss National banks (council and committee of bank).

With the army, it reaches the rank of lieutenant-colonel of infantry.

Federal adviser

He is elected with the Federal council the December 16th 1954 and directs the federal military department (ministry for Defense). By twice, it is President of the Swiss Confederation (1959, 1962).

Its passage to the government was obscured by the business of the planes Mirage , whose cost appeared higher than what had been budgeted for.

It implements the reform Armée 61 and is opposed successfully to two the intiatives antiradiation ones (one asking their prohibition in the Swiss army and the other right of the people to decide on their acquistion).

Following the conclusions of a parliamentary board of inquiry chaired by Kurt Furgler and whose principal members were Pierre Graber and Rudolf Gnägi, its position is weakened and PRD (democratic Radical party) groups it gives up presenting it to the function of vice-president of the Federal council.

It then leaves the government with effect with the December 31st 1966.

During its retirement

It works for the charitable organization Enfants of the World and chairs the Swiss Banque Populaire, fourth Swiss financial institution of then.
