Paul Chambers

Paul Laurence Dunbar Chambers, Jr . (born with Pittsburgh, the United States on April 22nd, 1935 - died on January 4th, 1969) is a Contrebassiste of Jazz of the years 1950 and 1960. It is one of the first double bass players of jazz used a bow, in addition to the usual Pizzicato in this music.

Biography

Born in Pittsburgh, Paul Chambers grows in Detroit. Its fame starts at the time of a round with the pianist George Wallington and the saxophonist tenor Paul Quinichette. It is discovered step the beboppers and joined the quintet of J.J. Johnson.

From 1955 to 1963 he is member of the quintet of Miles Davis, with which he records many albums. He works then with the musicians of Miles Davis, in particular Red Garland, Wynton Kelly, John Coltrane or Sony Rollins.

Heavy drinker and taking drugs regularly, it dies of Tuberculose in 1969 with old 33 years.

Influence

Paul Chambers recorded with most important jazzmen of his time, in particular Cannonball Adderley, Donald Byrd, Sony Rollins, Freddie Hubbard, Bud Powell, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Lee Morgan, Art Blakey, Wayne Shorter, Paul Quinichette, Wes Montgomery, Miles Davis, and John Coltrane.

He took part in mythical albums like Giant Steps of John Coltrane or Kind off Blue of Miles Davis.
