Paul Alexis

Paul Alexis (June 16th 1847 with Aix-en-Provence - July 28th 1901 with Levallois-Perret) is a novelist, dramatic author and French publicity agent.

Biography

After having made studies of right to Aix-en-Provence, it settles in 1869 with Paris where it becomes intimate of Zola and of its family. He collaborates in many newspapers, among which national Future , the Bell , the Corsair , the Cry of the people (under the pseudonym of Trublot), Gil Blas , the Newspaper , the Reform , the Collection , the Voltaire . He is the author of novels and news in the style naturalist, as well as plays, of which some written in collaboration with Oscar Méténier.

With J. - K. Huysmans, Henri Céard, Guy of Maupassant, Leon Hennique and Emile Zola, it belongs to the “group of the six” at the origin of the Soirées of Médan published in 1880.

He marries in 1883 Marie Louise Virginia Monnier (1865-1900). Of this marriage, it has two girls, Paule in 1885, Marthe in 1892.

We were joined together, the summer, at Zola, in its property of Médan , written Maupassant. During long digestions of the long meals (because we all are greedy and gourmets, and Zola only eats with him like three ordinary novelists), we caused. He told us his future novels, his literary ideas, his opinions on all things. Certain days one fished with the line. Hennique then was distinguished, with the great despair of Zola, which caught only slippers. Me, I remained wide in the boat the Chick, or I bathed during hours, while Paul Alexis ground with ideas grivoises, that Huysmans smoked of the cigarettes, and that Céard was bored, finding stupid the countryside.

Paul Alexis was enthusiastic admiror of Flaubert and large friend of Renoir. Henri Céard called it the “shade of Zola”. Cézanne painted a painting the representative making the reading with Emile Zola: reading of Paul Alexis at Zola .
