The Sulitzer system or the invention of the financial western

In 1980, Sulitzer proposes with the Denoël editions that one associates it with a writer to produce a “financial western”, a novel of adventures of finance-fiction. Wolf Durand, journalist and writer, agrees to be used as feather with the expert, which chooses to astutely reinject his advance payment in the publicity of the book. Thus profiting from the most pushed techniques of marketing, Money meets many people. Will follow Cash! (1981) and Fortune (1982), continuations of the exploits and financial reverses of Franz Cimballi, a retributive business man.

After these thrillers of a new kind, the duet publishes in Bernard Fixot in 1983 the green King , a romantic epopee which is a considerable public success and which will be translated in about thirty languages.

Frightening business man, Sulitzer becomes an icon and posts himself in the magazines people, delivering his receipts to make fortune. As from this moment, the titles follow one another, at the rate/rhythm of a novel per annum: Popov (1984), which depicts Soviet economic espionage; Hannah (1985) and the Empress (1986), inspired of the destiny of Helena Rubinstein…

If he is with his books a great popular success - certain pullings exceed the million specimens -, Sulitzer saw the rejection of the literary circles badly. In 1987, Pierre Assouline, director of To read , relayed by Bernard Pivot in “Apostrophes”, reveals the Sulitzer-Durand system, with the assistance of Robert Laffont. Sulitzer counteracts by delivering in the press the names of his/her collaborators, grateful being a “setter in book” and not a “author”.

Discredited, Sulitzer continues nevertheless to publish and sell its novels: Kate (1988) and its continuation Roads of Beijing (1989), chronicle of the Thirties which makes us attend with Chinese long walk and the Ethiopian conflict; Trust (1990), novel of adventures on the topic of the drug and the problem of the bleaching of the money which comes from it; Tantzor (1991); Berlin (1992); the Child of the Seven Seas (1993) and red Suns (1994), serialized stories which are spread out over about fifty years in the South Seas…

In 1995 the death of Loup Durand occurs which never will have clearly admitted to be “the feather” of Sulitzer. Its death does not prevent the system of perdurer, with less low pullings however. The last novels of Sulitzer join again with the financial vein of the beginnings, while taking as a starting point the legal topicality and international policy: the Angel of Baghdad (2004) milked war in Iraq; Empire of the Dragon (2006), the business of the Chinese textile…

Anecdote
