Paul-Elie Ranson (Limoges 1861 - Paris 1909).

Biography

After studies at the School of the Art schools applied to the industry of Limoges, it enters to the Académie Julian in 1886 and belonged to the group of the Nabis, which meet in 1889 in its workshop with the top of the family apartment of 25 boulevard Montparnasse renamed the Temple for the occasion. In 1891 it takes part in the notations symbolic of the Theater of Art, where the nabis were called by Paul Fort to organize a spectacle symbolic system with the profit of Verlaine and Gauguin, one plays Chérubin of Charles Morice and the Intruder of Maeterlinck. It takes part in the exposures of the group organized by Barc de Boutteville in its gallery of the street the Furrier of 1891 in 1895 like to the Salon of Independent the and the Salon of Free Esthetics in Brussels as from 1894. Its interest for the theosophy, spiritism, the magic, the occultism distinguish it from the others nabis. Its extremely many activities, especially lead it towards decorative Arts, ornamental panels, wallpapers, tapestries, stained glasses. For this reason he works for the opening of the gallery the Art nouveau of Bing in December 1895, with panels accompanying furniture by Henry Van de Velde and by the stained glasses carried out by the American glass Master Louis Comfort Tiffany. He draws stage sets as for the Drunk Boat according to Arthur Rimbaud with Paul Sérusier, assembles his own puppet theater, draws programs, collaborates in the Theater of the Puppets with the others nabis at the end of 1897, brushes labels bouffonnes and anticlericals, draws reasons for a cigar box. From 1899, its health is degraded and it approaches Georges Lacombe of which it contributes to decorate the house close to Alençon. At the end of its life it associates subjects mythological, biblical, anticlericals and of sorcery. After her death his wife will complete her project of the Académie Ranson. In spite of its ambiguous membership of the nabis it left us a work which goes from the painting of rest to decorative arts primarily governed by the direction of the decoration which does of him one of the promotteurs of the Art nouveau.
