Patrick Hillery

Patrick John Hillery (born the May 2nd 1923 in Miltown Malbay in the County of Clare) is an Irish politician. He was of 1976 with 1990 the sixth President of Ireland.

He was elected for the first time in 1951 like deputy Fianna Fáil of the County of Clare. There remained TD until 1973. For this period he was Minister for Education (1959-1965), Trade and Minister of Industry (1965-1966), Minister for Labor (1966-1969) and Minister for the External Businesses (1969-1973). For this reason, it negotiates the accession of Ireland to the European Community. In 1973 it becomes the first European Commissioner Irish, until 1976 when he becomes President of the Irish Republic. He will be president until 1990. He divides with Eamon de Valera and Seán T.O' Kelly to have exerted this load during two complete mandates. Hillery made studies of medicine to University College off Dublin. Turned over in its county of origin he exerts as a doctor and a medical examiner. He launches out in policy under the pressure of his mentor in Fianna Fail, Eamon de Valera.
