Patrice Chéreau is a director of Théâtre, realizer of Cinéma and actor French.
Biography
Youth
It was born with Lézigné, in Maine-et-Loire, the November 2nd 1944. He is the son junior by a couple of painters.
Installed in Paris, his/her parents initiate it in the world of arts while regularly taking it along to visit expositions.
Il enters to the College Louis-the-Large and joined the theater company of its establishment. To be an actor is not enough for him: he puts in scene and launches out in the design of the decorations and the costumes.
Beginnings with the theater
In 1966, at 22 years, in France of before May-1968, it takes the direction of the Theater of Sartrouville.Comme the majority of his/her companions, it engages in a political theater where it posts marked positions.
The bankruptcy, in 1969, of the Theater of Sartrouville, pushes Patrice Chéreau towards Italy, where it integrates Piccolo Teatro of Milan. He works at the same time in France, where he puts himself in scene, in Marseilles, in Richard II of William Shakespeare.
Puis of 1971 to 1977, it directs with Roger Planchon and Robert Gilbert the Popular National theater of Lyon-Villeurbanne.
The setting in scene of the Ring of Nibelung for the Boxing ring of the centenary (1976 with 1980) with Bayreuth makes it famous to the international plan.
Its first films
For Chéreau, the cinema in common keeps with the theater the time and unity of place; the scenes become with the screen of the sequences. But for him the cinema makes it possible to better emphasize the pictorial emotions of sound enfance.The first realization of Patrice Chéreau, the Flesh of the orchis , adapts with freedom, in 1974, the homonymous novel of James Adley Chase.
In 1976, Patrice Chéreau saw an exceptional experiment: the setting in scene of the Tetralogy of Richard Wagner, at the request of Pierre Boulez, for the centenary of the Opera of Bayreuth, sanctuary of the German type-setter.
Its second film, in 1978, Judith Therpauve with Simone Signoret in the title role, although very dense, however seems less succeeded of the director.
Almond trees
Of 1982 with 1990, Chéreau directs the house of the culture of Nanterre, become Théâtre Nanterre-Almond trees, National Dramatic Center on its arrival. In 1983, after Combat of negro and dogs , of his/her friend Bernard-Marie Koltès, it assembles there the Folding screens of Genet in sulfurous joke. It alternates with happiness the traditional one (Marivaux, Mozart) and the contemporary.For this period, it carries out its most personal film, the wounded Man (1983). For this film, it will obtain, with Herve Guibert, César of the best original screenplay in 1984.
Maturity
At the end of the season 1989 - 1990, Chéreau leaves the theater of the Almond trees. It is devoted to the opera ( Wozzeck , of Berg, 1993; Don Giovanni , of Mozart, 1994) and with the preparation of a large cinematographic fresco, the Queen Margot . The film, according to Alexandre Dumas, is written over four years in collaboration with Danièle Thompson.In parallel, it puts in scene at the Odéon, Time and the room of Botho Strauss (1991) then a new version of In the loneliness of the cotton fields , of Bernard-Marie Koltès, in 1995.
New realization with the cinema: Chéreau invites us to follow it to Limoges in a strange family for Those which like to me will take the train .
In 2000, it realizes, for the first time abroad and in English, Intimité which meets success near the public. Absent from Cannes, it gains the Ours of gold to Berlin and Kerry Fox, in the main role, the Price of female role.
In 2003, with the exit of His/her brother , it replonge in the drama of a divided family.
In March 2007, it signs with 150 intellectuals a text who invite to vote for Ségolène Royal, " against a line of arrogance" , for " a left of espérance". After having supported François Mitterrand in 1981, there remains faithful to the socialist camp.
