The Romains used Patmos as place of deportation. Thus, in 95, the Emperor Domitien exiled there the evangelist Jean which wrote the Apocalypse there.

In 1088 Saint Christodule made build with the assistance of the Byzantine Emperor Alexis Ier Comnène the monastery of Saint-Jean-the Évangéliste, with the site of a temple of Artémis. The monastery authorized in 1138 the inhabitants of the island to be settled around its enclosing wall. The town of Patmos (Chora) had been born.

In 1207, Patmos passed under the Venetian domination and was conquered by the Ottoman Empire in 1537. The Turkish occupation lasted until 1912.
