The notation (or writing ) scientific is a representation of a decimal Number in the shape of a product of two factors. The first, called Mantissa, is a decimal Number ranging between 1 and 10, the 10 being excluded, i.e. there is one Chiffre (not no one) on the left of the comma, then a variable number of decimals (numbers after the comma), which depends on the Précision. The second factor, called exhibitor, is a whole power of 10.

Examples

  • : 123423456 is written 1,234 in scientific notation.

  • : 0.000   123 is written 1,23
  • 451 is written 4,51
  • : 92384 is written 9,2384

The scientific notation makes it possible to immediately know the Order of magnitude of the number since it is about the value of the exhibitor. It also makes it possible to simplify the multiplication and division, while proceeding to the products of the mantissas on the one hand, and the exhibitors on the other hand.

This notation is very useful for the physical quantities whose values are often framed with a Margin of error. One often restricts with the significant figures, for example the notation 1,234 0 means that the value lies between: 1   233950 and: 1234050.

Lastly, this system makes it possible to be freed from the regional differences as the American English term “Billion” (which means billion in Anglo-Saxon language).
