Pasteur Bizimungu

Pasteur Bizimungu (born in 1950) was President of Rwanda of the July 19th 1994 with the March 23rd 2000.

It was born in the prefecture from Gisenyi in a categorized family Hutu. Pasteur Bizimungu followed studies of economy to the faculty of Strasbourg to France.

Until 1990, Bizimungu supported the mode of sole party of MRND created by Juvénal Habyarimana. About mid the 1990, revolted by the political evolution and the projects of assassination of the Akazu in which it takes part, it secretly leaves Rwanda with his friend Valens Kajeguhakwa, categorized Tutsi. They join the patriotic FPR Front together Rwandan (a group exiled which was mainly Tutsi), when his/her brother, a colonel in the Rwandan Armed forces (FAR), was assassinated, perhaps on the orders of the government.

After the death of the president Habyarimana in April 1994 and the beginning of the Rwandan genocide, the FPR launched a complete invasion of Rwanda. In July 1994, the FPR obtained the control of the country and established a national government of unit. Paul Kagame, new “strong man of Rwanda”, became vice-president. Bizimungu became president, so that the Hutus (majority of the population) are still strongly represented in the government.

During the administration of Bizimungu, Kagame was regarded as the true chief of the government. Thereafter, Bizimungu was in disagreement with Kagame in connection with the government policy and of the intolerance of Kagame for dissidence. He resigned in March 2000, and Kagame became president.

In May 2001, Bizimungu founded a movement of opposition, the Democratic party for the Revival (PDR), called “Ubuyanja” in Kinyarwanda. This party was immediately prohibited by the government, which showed it to be a radical Hutu party. The April 19th 2002, it showed Bizmungu to endanger the safety of the state. In 2004, he was condemned to a sorrow of 15 years imprisonment for formation of a Milice, incentive to violence, and Détournement.

April 6th, 2007, the English site of the BBC announced that Bizimungu was released the very same day by presidential pardon.
