Passing note
In tonal harmony, a passing note is a foreign Note which connects between them the real notes of a agreement with which consequently, it forms a momentary Dissonance. One can say that a passing note is a embroidery from which the resolvent note is different from its preparatory note .
-
the passing note is usually placed on a weak time or a weak left time (examples has, B, C & D). When it is on a key period or a strong part of time, it is necessary that it is of short duration, if not, it must be analyzed like a appoggiatura.
-
the connection between the real notes is done by melody movement united: the preparatory note of the passing note is the joint preceding note, its resolvent note is the joint following note. Preparatory note and resolvent note are generally real notes of the agreement. But they can be as other passing notes (example A), essence being as, in a succession of notes ascending or downward, the first and last the notes of this succession are real notes placed on key periods or strong parts of time.
-
the passing notes can be simultaneous (examples B & C).

Remarks
-
1. A passing note can be faded without to involve a modulation - in the event of chromatic Mouvement for example.
-
2. In the minor mode, the ascending passing notes belong to the ascending melody minor , the downward melody minor , passing notes descending .
-
3. A passing note should not involve successive perfect consonances compared to the real notes of the agreement.
