Passiflora

The Passifloras , the kind ( Passiflora ), gather more than 500 species of climbing plants of the family of the Passifloracées to the spectacular flowers, but their abundance is guaranteed only in the areas with soft climate.

They draw their name owing to the fact that the missionaries Jésuites were useful themselves, to represent the Passion of Christ near the natives, of the flower of this liane : its pistil, the drawings of its corolla and various floral parts resemble a crown of spines, the hammer and the nails of the Crucifixion.

The flowers are known in Phytothérapie for their sedative action. The Grenadille ( Passiflora edulis ) gives an edible fruit to the acidulous savor (the Fruit of passion ) which enters the composition of sorbets, juice or purée.

Almost all the grounds are appropriate for the culture of the passiflora, except very dry or alkaline.
