Passementerie

The passementerie gathers the whole of the productions in wire of any nature (plant, animal, metal,…) used in vestimentary decoration or interior architecture. It also indicates the trade of these products.
Examples of braiding: cords, Lace, fringe, edging, Ribbon.
Technique
Passementerie uses three kinds of weaving looms:- the trade with hand;
- the trade rat trap;
- the trade with hooks for the industrial series.
Passementerie and clothing
Passementerie being an expensive ornament, it was reserved a long time for an elite like signs social distinction, of a capacity royal, aristocratic, religious or military. As of the end of the 18th century, it becomes obsolete with the simplification of the Vêtement S.The braidings most used in the mode are:
- crushed fringes (flexible);
- lapped twisted fringes (rigid);
- matched or squared fringes.
Some buttons or brandebourgs can be in passementerie.
