Passe-Partout was an emission of Québécois Télévision addressing itself to the young children, financed by the Minister of education of Quebec (MEQ). It was diffused on the waves of 1977 to 1998, on several Canadian chains of which Radio-Quebec, Radio-Canada and TV Ontario.

History

Birth

In the years 1970, a movement of equity is made more and more feel. One wanted to give a chance to everyone to be with equality in the personal, social and school success. While these ideas give rise to Sesame Street in the United States, Passe-Partout is about to hatch with the Quebec.

All people who had been approximate to adapt the series Sesame Street for the Quebec had refused, judging that it was about one series to which the children, in a Québécois context, would have difficulty of being identified. Consequently, the office of the MEQ decided to elect it (late) office of the general Service of the means of teaching (SGME) for a project of 125 fifteen minutes of a television program intended for the four year old young people. It is in 1973, that is to say two years later, that the project is given between the hands of Laurent Lachance.

At the time, all the projects of television program were initially to be subjected to Radio-Quebec. Since for this project, the role of the SGME encroached on the mandate of Radio-Quebec (to produce educational and cultural emissions), the company did not have interest so that the project is concretized. After three years of strike in Radio-Quebec, Lachance required of its owner to entrust the project to someone else, informant who it was not interested any more. He is unaware of however that its owner awaited only one demonstration of the incapacity of Radio-Quebec to make the project as elected before transferring the whole at a private company.

JPL Production, subsidiary of TV-Metropolis, gains the invitation to tender launched by the SGME. February 14th, 1977, JPL Production concludes the agreement with the MEQ for the production from an emission for child “addressing himself to the global population, with an special attention in the underprivileged medium”. The first diffusion of Passe-Partout is made on November 14th of the same year.

Pierre F. Brault composed the music and the songs.

Diffusion

At the beginning of its diffusion, the emission is well accommodated as well by the children as by the parents. Passe-Partout will be a success which will not be contradicted during more than 20 years, making the object of several repeat broadcasts with Radio-Quebec, Radio-Canada and TV Ontario.

Also, the three principal adult characters, Sleeve-board, Pass key and Balaclava, will make theater tours everywhere in Quebec during several years.

Claimed years since, a box DVD of Passe-Partout including episodes 1 to 25 left on November 21st, 2006. The second box with episodes 26 to 50 left on May 15th, 2007. Moreover, the Québécois Museum of popular culture presents an exposure, the phenomenon Passe-Partout from May 16th, 2007 to September 1st, 2008.

Its concept

The emission is divided into three shutters:
  • shutter of the Puppet S
  • shutter of whimsical the
  • shutter of the interview with the children.

The reason of the division of the emission by modules is simple: it makes it possible the child to take down, if a subject interests it less, during a short moment. It is indeed difficult to maintain all the attention of a child for half an hour.

Puppets

The original intention of Passe-Partout is to give to the children the self-confidence. To achieve this goal, the emission must leave from the point of view of the child: the family. Since it proves too be likely to film a family for one two years period and half, the production in fact determines that another means should be used, puppets, to carry out the settings in marital status. In addition, the puppets allow a larger distance between the televiewers and the characters and make it possible those to further go in the expression of the emotions. The family is made up of Perlin (father), Perline (mother), Cannelle (girl) and Prune (boy).

The puppets were created by Pierre Régimbald and Nicole Lapointe.

The whimsical ones

Since the puppets represent only one frontage of the child, and that the public targeted with is still discovered of its body, from whimsical will interpret the exercises of motricity and the settings in situation the moindrement physical ones. Moreover, the human presence brings a certain heat and proves to be an essential component for the module of confidence, generally in conclusion of the emission. The whimsical principal ones are Passe-Carreau (Claire Pimparé), Passe-Partout (Marie Eykel) and Balaclava (Jacques the Happy).

The interview with the children

The interview with the children is used as Signature with the series. This shutter sends a clear message to the child, as what if he sees children with the screen, that must relate to it, to challenge it. That also invites the child to pass to the action, to leave the emission interested to do something, to also say “Me, I am able! ”

Description of the characters

Pass key (Marie Eykel) Although the emission bears its name, Passe-Partout is not the main character of the emission. Actually, they are several and each one has its role to play. That of Pass key was on the level of the emotions. It helped the children to leave their shell and to communicate what they felt at the time of various occasions. With this intention, she told them itself her little stories and said what she had felt when it arrived. That it is joy, sadness, concern, selfishness, fury, it found the witty remarks to explain it.

On the other hand, it always did not find the witty remarks into full with fire of the action, but well then, with a little retreat. She said to the child that the next time she could make or to say that to the place and that showed with the child that when a problem occurs, it is not serious, that it is possible to solve it and that even if we do not find a solution immediately, we will be able to find one of them later.

In short, its goal was to show that it is very important to announce our feeling to the other people, thus they can include/understand us and that can regulate conflicts.

Sleeve-board (Claire Pimparé) Sleeve-board is one of the main characters whom one calls the whimsical ones. Its role was to make move the child so that it carries out exercises and to show him what it could do like jumping, to rock, stretch, etc It wanted that the child becomes aware of his body and that it manages to make move the various parts of this one, in short, to have a good coordination.

It also made develop the direction of the observation and the direction of the deduction in the child. We have to only think of the box in which there were hidden objects. Such as for example: “That is not drunk, that is eaten, it is yellow and one must remove the peel. It is a banana! ”.

Without forgetting the logical squares that it made with Passe-Montagne. “The ant says it, the mouse shouts it, it is here that it is written” and “Will find, will not find, which goes, which does not go”. The child thus developed his logical side while questioning himself on odd ideas such as: “this is possible to comb an orange” or “I drink bread”.

Therefore, Passe-Carreau definitively had a place well with it in the series, like all the other characters besides.

Passe-Montagne (Jacques the Happy one) Passe-Montagne was the character who made speak the child and made him make vocal exercises. It dealt with phonetics. It tried to say sentences which could be difficult to pronounce and it asked the child to make like him. It invariably purposely made be mistaken and pronounce any eighth note, but that showed with the child that it was normal not always not to be able of the first blow, that took practice before arriving there. Who does not remember his “estricity” hein?! “Me, I know that the estricity.” But the light remained extinct as long as it did not succeed. And when it succeeded, it was so proud, it tried to repeat it, but unfortunately, that always did not function.

Balaclava was also the man of service. Being the only male of the apartment, it often sometimes happened to him to be the scapegoat of the girls, without that being malicious. They enjoyed to call it “the large one”, but he always did not like that.

Despite everything, the three whimsical ones lived in harmony and they got along very well together.

Fardoche (Pierre Dufresne) Fardoche was the man of the farm. A little as a cool uncle super to which we want to often return visit and that we let us like that it comes to the house. He taught us a heap from tricks on the animals of the farm, the countryside, the kitchen garden. All the things which one was not accustomed to see while living downtown.

It was very funny, always ready to make jokes, we have only at the same time to think where it arrived to the whimsical ones with tuque and that it refused to remove it because he did not have any more a hair in lower part or at the same time where he scented the moustache of Balaclava to play a turn to him. It was a true end in the train and it was a joy of seeing it each time.

Grandmother (Kim Yaroshevskaya) Grandmother was the grandmamma of each and everyone without to have family ties. She liked everyone as if they were all her grandsons and grand-daughters and everyone liked it. She showed them to make eat, how to make a newspaper of district, how désennuyer. In short, it did a little all.

She often read us stories all more abracadabrantes the ones that the others. She had an insane talent to invent and tell the tales. She had an imagination without terminal.

Julie (Jocelyne Goyette) Julie was indisputably the woman with to do everything emission. All the possible jobs, it occupied them that it is professor of nursery school, librarian, cashier with the grocer or employed of a animalery. Just like Andre, it was there in a sporadic way. It made short appearances, according to the set of themes of the episode.

André (Andre Cartier) It was funny of number this Andre. A little buffoon, not too much wisdom, but on the other hand, it was very débrouillard. It did many manual work. He liked to arrange all sorts of thing. He was the uncontested friend of whimsical, as well as Julie.

Cinnamon (Eve Gagnier) Cinnamon was the Prune binocular. It had the Middle Age aimed by the emission, i.e. 4 years (the emission was addressed to the 3 to 5 years). It represented the little girl in whom one could recognize oneself. She lived all kinds of adventures and one learned at the same time as she. One learned from what had the air our bladder, that it was normal to have chicken pox and which they was contagious. It had a seal like toy and it adored it. It arrived to him a little just like at any child of its age. She generally got along very well with her brother, they had the same circle of friends. Moreover, they had had a baffle to determine if Doualé were the Prune or Cinnamon friend, obviously, it was the friend of both. Both, they had a very great complicity.

Pruneau (Mirielle Lachance) Pruneau was the Cinnamon twin. He was thus also 4 years old, the approximate age which we had when we listen to Passe-Partout. At least, it was the suggested age; O). Just like his/her sister, it lived all kinds of adventures which the boys of its age usually live. It was sometimes a little fanfaron, but one realized well that it was only one frontage, it liked to face and make as if it were not afraid of nothing, even if it were not the case. It had an imaginary friend who was called simply “my friend” and its preferred toy was a dragon. Like several boy of its age, he wanted to marry his mother once made older. Undermine anything, it was very attached to his sister and accepted with difficulty that she makes things without him as when Cannelle went to a spectacle of dance with Mélodie and that he made a crisis because he was not invited. Perline explained to him why it would be its tower another time, that it is obliged to make all only his sister made.

Perline (Louise Rémy) Mom of the twins, Perline was a mother of her time. She was to work part-time with the break-down mechanic of the corner to provide the needs of the family, even if her husband had a full-time employment. She educated her children and us also at the same time. She seemed to be the perfect, understanding mother with wish. But it was not let any impose, it could baffle the children very well and punish them. She was generally very soft, merry. She also taught us that the role of a mother was very demanding, that she could be exhausted, a beautiful small message so that one leaves our own quiet mother to the occasion. She had good values which she tried to inculcate in her children.

Perlin (Robert Maltese) Father of the twins and husband of Perline (which would have guessed it?! hihi), it was the standard image governor. He was very soft, sang lullabies to deaden the children, but he was also very authoritative. They had interest to listen to it if they did not want to be punished. Moreover, one day, it had engueulé them because they did too many noises to its taste and it had even dared to crown after unemployment. That showed us that our parents also are human and that it arrives to them food of the very difficult things and that they are annoyed. The message was well sent: when dad seems in anger, leaves it quiet and test to occupy you without carrying out too much train. He worked very extremely (in the construction industry) so that its family does not miss anything, a chance that his wife was there to help it. He and its family represented an ordinary family which lived downtown and which was not rolling in money. That taught us that despite everything, it is possible to be happy, even with if little.

Melody (Jocelyne Goyette) Better Cinnamon friend, it was a little large little girl of the series. Prune already mentioned that besides by adding that did not disturb it because it was fine. She had a little sister of the name of Double who did all that she made, which did not make its deal.

Melody was kind naive and a little plaignarde. Despite everything, all the children liked it. His/her parents were separated and she lived with her mother and saw her father on the occasion. It was the families beginning burst in the company and it showed us that it could function well nevertheless.

Ti-Bit (Michele Deslauriers) This boy a little older than the others was a leader, but also small tanning, not to say another thing. He represented a little rebellious friend who always does what he wants because nobody really seems to deal with him. Sometimes unfortunately, it sometimes happened to him to influence his friends negatively as the time where it was going to the vacant ground to play baseball and which the twins wanted to go there. He did not want to await so that they ask the permission, then they went there without it to say and was made dispute while returning because Perline sought them and that it was very anxious. However, it did not have only bad ideas. It had organized the festival of the lane to divert everyone, it also knew how to obtain under: while going to sell bottles to the break-down mechanic or many clotheshangers. Undermine anything, it was débrouillard and it was really a character attaching with his leather overcoat, its cap and its air of small “tough”.

Doualé (Nicole Fontaine) Its role in the series was extremely simple, to show us that it was like any child, even if it did not have the skin of the same color and that it did not come from the same country. Moreover, she a little learned us on her culture, would be this only by teaching us a creole song. She also learned us that there were other nationalities that ours and that racism did not have its place. She gave us desire for going to visit her island in the Antilles, as when she has to bring her bundle among twins. In short, in spite of its differences, it was very accepted near the other children.

Rigodon (Élizabeth Chouvalidzé) Rigodon was the cousin of Cinnamon and Pruneau and he lived in the countryside. For this reason he always did not know the plays of the other children since he necessarily did not play same things. Like the play of vegetables, he wanted to play potato, but the instruction was that one sang a song and that one was to add vegetables in our basket: “When I go to the market, I put in my `tit basket, a tomato”.

However, being older, he taught them any kind of thing. He explained to them inter alia what it was of living in the countryside, a little as Fardoche made with the whimsical ones. He taught them what he did in his university: the nursery school. He was a little more mature than his cousins, but liked to also play of the turns.

Grand-papa Bi Jean-Claude Robillard) He was the father of Perline thus, the grandfather of Prune and Cannelle, but also of Rigodon. He was a grandfather all that there is of more conventional, although personally, I did not find it badly old. He liked to spoil his grandchildren and to play with them. He took them along to make camp-site and learned to them full with beautiful things on nature.

He had a animalery, it is besides there that he had his mouse “any p' tite” and the red fish which he offered in gift to the twins. In spite of its age, it was very active.

I remember that the first time that Mélodie was to meet it, it was afraid, but it ended up going to see it and they played together with Cannelle and Prune. Fortunately that the latter had said to him that it was quite nice their grandfather and that it did not have any reason to be afraid.

Mrs. Coucou (Marthe Choquette) It was the tiring neighbor, although sympathetic nerve which wanted of evil to nobody. She liked to give pleasure with the others and to come to them to assistance. She had more than one turn in her bag and the children liked it, even if she gave nozzles in tweezers and that they hated that, like no matter whom besides.

She was also the image of the unmarried mother since she had had a baby named Cachou and that nobody forever known who was the father of this child, she in made mention forever. The birth of Catechu had been a whole event besides and that enabled us to learn much from things on the babies and also on the fact that we all grow and that we have all be a little baby one day or the other.

Dyes with carmine (Helene Lasnier) She was the teacher at the nursery which the children attended. Soft and nice, all the children liked it and it found always full with good ideas to occupy them. She regulated the conflicts, comforted the small wounded hearts, gave affection. She was not alone at the nursery, she had a small canary of the name of Cui-Cui and the children liked it him too.

Virgule (Jacques Brouillet) Virgule was the guard of Prune and Cannelle, one often did not see it. It raised same hair that Perline had had when Mrs. Coucou wanted to give him a little change: black and curly with wish. It was a little the prolongation of the parents, it explained essential things to them as what it is necessary to do in the event of fire. It made them make plays, do-it-yourself. It showed with the children that it was not a drama to be made keep and that could, quite to the contrary, being very pleasant and amusing.

Guillemet (Gaetan Gladu) He was the brother of Comma, the usual guard of Cinnamon and Pruneau, he replaced it when this one could not go there. It showed us that even if the parents are not there, the same payments should be kept as when it kept the twins and Mélodie and that the latter and Pruneau wanted to listen to television before going to the bed. He said to them that if their mother said yes, he was also going to say yes, but if not, they could not. As in fact, the mothers were not agreement. It benefitted from it to explain to them why when it was young, it was to lie down very early. He explained to them why they were lucky to be able to play a little and of being able to lie down so late. This type of things pass always better coming from a third person than coming from our own parents.

Alakazou (Paul Berval) funny of number this zebra. Alakazou was a character who passed on television and whom the twins and their friends adored to look at. He learned to them from the things, he diverted them. In short, Alakazou was as an mini-episode of Pass key which was intended for the puppets, but with only one character. It was seen how the children reacted vis-a-vis him and one recognized oneself in them. It made them make tricks as well as the whimsical ones while making us make with us. When the emission was finished, the children continued to assimilate what they had just learned, thus, they gave us the procedure to follow. That indicated to us that once the emission is finished, it is not a reason for necessarily passing to another thing and that it is good to make a return on what one has just learned and to continue our training.

Carry-S-Eyes (Gaetan Gladu???) Carry-S-Eyes takes along the child to be questioned on what he sees. All that he sees is important and this is why he asks the child if he sees it too. He develops the direction of the sight and this is why he has very large eyes with long lashes to highlight them well.

Carry-Ears Carry-Ears is obviously the direction of hearing. He hears sounds and asks the child if he also hears it him, then, they must guess what produces this sound. Its characteristic is that it has very large ears, a little like Dumbo the elephant.

Carry-Nose Carry-Nose is another puppet which helps the child to develop his five directions, it deals with the sense of smell. It has a lengthened face and has a long very protuberant nose. It feels all that is possible to feel and tries to guess which is this odor.

Porte-Plumes Porte-Plumes is a puppet in the shape of bird and its role was to take along the child to the reflection and the entry of charge. He often asked, just like the others “carries… ”: “Do you know It? ”

Door-Hands Door-hands incarnates the direction of the touch, it has large hands like gloves of baseball. It touches with all, it likes various textures which the objects can have, like the softness of a fishing. It takes along the child to make the turn of its house to find objects of different composition, thus, that changes the effect that gives when one touches there.

Carry-Stops Carry-Stops is the direction of tasting. He likes to eat good food to taste each savor the most various ones that the others. He wonders sometimes if all has the same taste and why. He develops in the child makes it recognize food only while tasting there so that he takes conscience well that the tastes are different from one food to another.

Zig Zag (Michele Deslauriers) Zig Zag reflects the difference. Throughout the episodes he seeks his parents, thus he visits the cats, the pigs, rabbits and other animals. Each time, he believes to recognize his father or his/her mother and there, the animal in question informs him of the similarities, but especially differences which they have both and this is why they are not parents. Zig Zag is very disappointed each time and it turns over in the search of its truths parents. Although the series was diffused for the last time in 1998, Passe-Partout retains a choice place in the Québécois popular culture. Cowboys Fringants and Dumas affirmed on several occasions to be inspired by the music of Pierre F. Brault, type-setter of the whole of the songs and counting rhymes of the first series. Besides those and those having grown by listening to the emissions form part of what is called the generation Passe-Partout . In 2005, " the Franc-tireurs " carried out an interview with Marie Eykel on the subject. In 2006, a special program of " Here Louis-Jose Houde " dedicated to Passe-Partout had invited the three whimsical ones, Marie Eykel, Jacques the Happy and Claire Pimparé. The actors were also the guests of Guy A. Lepage with the emission Everyone Speaks about it, diffused in November 2006, to underline the launching of box DVD of the first 25 episodes diffused in an original manner in 1977.

Marie Eykel and Jacques the Happy finally obtained the rights of diffusion of the first 125 episodes. The box thus was produced by the two actors, with the collaboration of TV-Quebec and was distributed by Alliance Atlantis Vivafilm. The box is available since November 2006.

To spring 2007, the Museum of Popular culture of Three-Rivers presents an exposure on Passe-Partout which is thus in hand at the time of the thirtieth birthday of the beginning of the diffusion of the famous series (November 1977).
