Paso of San Francisco

The Paso of San Francisco is a collar of the Andes cordillera which links on a side the Argentinian province of Catamarca and other the IIIe Région of Atacama of Chile.

The collar delivers passage on the Argentinian side to the trunk road 60, asphalted well, left the province of Córdoba in the center of the country. Chilean side the road n° 31 leads to the center of Copiapó, capital of the area of Atacama.

Description

The collar is with the very high altitude of 4  748 meters. It crosses a formed area of an impressive series of high volcanos of which some are hardly deadened. The top of the collar is in a passage between two volcanos: in north, the Falso Azufre (5  906 m) and in the south the volcano San Francisco (6  016 m). Further, at the North-East are located the Dos Conos ( Two cones ) and the Peinado. In the west, in Chilean territory, a lake called is Laguna verde ( green lagoon ). More to the south extends a frontier volcanic chain including/understanding from is in west the Nevado Incahuasi (6  638 m), the El Muerto (6  488 m), the Nevados Ojos del Salado (6  868 m), the Nacimientos or Walter Penck I (6  669 m), the Nevado Very Cruces (6  749 m), and well of others still.

The slope Chile in collar, served by road n° 31 ends in the National park Nevado Tres Cruces, with a few 65 kilometers from there.

Argentinian side, not far in the east from the collar, approximately 45 kilometers, on the trunk road 60, is the small town of Las Grutas with its station of gendarmerie, within what is called the vegas of San Francisco (vegas = wet valleys equipped with vegetation). For the tourists of adventure, eager to explore the very isolated and uninhabited area which surrounds the collar, there is average to be made there help in the event of problem.
