Pascal Comelade
Pascal Comelade is a French musician of Catalan expression born the June 30th 1955 with Montpellier.
After having lived some years with Barcelona, it publishes its first album Fluences marked by the Electronic music and the group Heldon, led by his friend Richard Pinhas (whom it will find thereafter on a piece of Musiques for films vol.2 then over the length of a whole album: Oblique Sessions II ). Comelade takes part in addition in a pop group of short duration, Fall off Saigon, very influenced by the Young Marble Giants.
Thereafter, its music becomes much more acoustic and is characterized by the use of instrument-toys as much in solo that with its group with variable geometry, the Bel Canto Orquestra. If the rupture on the level of the sound is obvious, it seems in so far as this new orientation tends to reconcile old obsession for the repetitive music, tested until now via electronics, and a more melody tendency, tested within Fall off Saigon. The originality of the work of Pascal Comelade is posted amongst other things in its manner of trying a conciliation between all the forms of the popular music under the angle of omnipresence in it of the concept of repetition. As much influenced by repetitive American (Philip Glass, Steve Reich) that by music traditional (Sardane Catalan, Tango, Musette), by Krautrock (Faust, Edge) that by the rock'n'roll roll (Pretty Things, Captain Beefheart, The Kinks), Pascal Comelade tries to operate a synthesis of it by putting at the day the repetitive screen which is common for them, in particular in the innumerable recoveries which it records of these artists. This process is obvious in its disc " Haïku S of piano " (1991), which is presented in the form of a summary of the popular music of the 20th century carried out to the piano (sometimes large sometimes toy). The standards are the subject of recoveries seldom exceeding the two minutes, and reduced to their melody or rhythmic screen simplest.
He collaborated with very many singers and musicians resulting from all horizons like Robert Wyatt, Dani, Faust, Miossec, Jaume Sisa, Toti Soler, Jac Berrocal, P.J. Harvey to quote only some and to stress of them the eclecticism of the character. These collaborations testify once again to a will to embrace a broad spectrum of the popular music. However, in the constant evolution of his play of Piano, which it develops in particular in concert, Pascal Comelade testifies to a research which exceeds of much simple compilation. Its play oscillates between an unceasingly increasing tendency towards sobriety (evoking Erik Satie more and more) and a not pretended presence of the interferences which the body of the musician prints with this play (extreme stress caused by the representations in public, difficulties inherent in the fact of playing on miniature instruments).
