Party of the national alarm clock

The Parti the national alarm clock ( Partai Kebangkitan Bangsa or PKB) is the 3rd political party Indonesia N in term of voice. It is directed by Alwi Shihab, former Foreign Minister under the presidency of Abdurrahman Wahid.

The PKB was founded in 1999 by Abdurrahman Wahid (known as " Gus Dur"), respected Moslem leader, who was then with the head of the organization Nahdatul Ulama. Gus Dur was one of the figures of the opposition under the mode of Soeharto.

The base of the party are the rural regions of Java, where the Islam is still " traditionnaliste" , i.e. marked by the importance of the Masters of religion or Oulémas. But the PKB wants to be opened, and does not preach an explicitly political role of Islam. In this direction, it is not a Moslem party, contrary to the PPP, which refers explicitly to Islam in its program. One must rather arrange the PKB at the sides of the parties known as laic, like the Golkar and the Partai Demokrasi Indonesia Perjuangan.

The PKB obtained 10,6% of the voices at the time of the last elections in 2004, behind Golkar (21,6%) and the PDI-P (18,5%).
