Party of independence

The Parti independence ( Sjálfstæðisflokkur or SJ in Iceland) is a Political party Icelandic.

It is the political principal training of preserving type traditional. Founded the May 25th 1929, it results from the fusion of the Conservative party and the Liberal party, in order to obtain the independence of the Denmark. It supports since the Icelandic membership of NATO and is opposed so that Iceland joins the European Union (Iceland takes part only in the European Economic space).

It is the Icelandic principal party since its foundation in 1929 and collects in general more of the third of the voices (34% in 2003 - 22 Député S with the Althing on 63). Its principal leader was Davíð Oddsson, Prime Minister of 1991 to the September 15th 2004. In 2004, SJ voluntarily left, with its partner of coalition, the Party of Progress, the post of Prime Minister.

The President of the SJ since 2005 is Geir Haarde, Prime Minister since the June 15th 2006.

In 1994, the SJ lost the town hall of Reykjavik, which it had held for more than fifty years, with the profit of the Party of the Women (member of the Alliance).
