The left the four riders is an opening to the failures which is characterized by the blows 1.e4 e5 2.Cf3 Cc6 3.Cc3 Cf6

With this opening, one obtains a series of identical blows, until the blacks diverge.

The white now have the choice between two great alternatives:

  • d4 (Scottish alternative) with a direct central attack, as in the Scottish part.
  • Fb5 (Spanish alternative). The white exert a pressure on the black rider, and indirectly on the center.
