Folding@Home is a project of Calcul distributed.

Its goal is to study the folding up of the Protéine S in various configurations of temperature and pressure in order to better include/understand this process and to draw from it from useful knowledge (which could amongst other things make it possible to manufacture new drugs, in particular against the Maladie of Alzheimer even the Cancer).

The person in charge of the project is Vijay S. Pande, of the American university of Stanford.

The study is carried out by an engine that each one can install on its computer (under Windows, Linux, Mac OS or PlayStation 3, in line of order or graphic mode, in the form of a screen of day before). For safety reasons, the source code of this software is not diffused. Indeed, in the contrary case, no matter who would be able to distort the project by communicating false molecules with the waiters.

Each protein configuration occupies the processor customer when it is not used. That thus does not give place to any deceleration of the machine. Each calculation lasts from 4 to approximately 200 hours, according to the hardware configuration.

This project was supported by Google, which had integrated in the Googlebar, under Windows, a button making it possible to launch or stop the process and formless on its progress report.

Folding@Home is organized by an institution with not-lucrative goal (the Pande Group of the Stanford University' S Chemistry Department ), which is a guarantee that the results of calculations will be accessible to the researchers and other scientists from the whole world.

PlayStation 3

The computing power and the access to the networks of the PlayStation 3 inspired the Université of Stanford which cooperates with Sony so that the PS3 takes part in Folding@Home under the name of cure@PS3.

The project was launched on March 23rd, 2007 (day of the European launching of the console) in the form of an update. The March 25th, more than 30.000 PS3 had already returned calculating units and the total design power of Folding@home reached the 952 TéraFLOPS, including 697 for the PS3. Folding@Home reached the PétaFLOPS (1015 operations a second) in September 2007.
