Parotia sefilata

The Bird of paradise sifilet ( Parotia sefilata ; in English: The Western Parotia ) is a bird of paradise of intermediate size.

Description

It measures 33 cm with a tail average length.

The male has a black plumage with on the chest a yellow green triangular escutcheon and a triangle of feathers silver plated on the head. Its plumage is supplemented long black feathers on the side of the chest and three decorative feathers behind each eye.

The female has a maroon plumage without any decoration.

Distribution and habitat

Endemic bird in Indonesia, one finds it only in the high forests of Vogelkop and the Péninsule Wandammen in the West of the New Guinea.

Food

It nourishes especially fruits and figs.

Reproduction

In parade, the male dances and slack its large feathers, posting its escutcheon on its breast piece. It shakes the head and the neck quickly for showing well the silver plated triangle which it carries on the head.
