Parly 2 is a regional Shopping mall French located at the Chesnay (Yvelines) close to Versailles. Opened the November 4th 1969 with 150 shops, it was the first shopping mall of this importance in France. Conceived for the Automobile , it is established near an exit of the A13 and is equipped with vast car parks on two levels.
The shopping mall includes/understands a covered gallery on three levels, in which are established branches of the department stores Paris iens (Spring, BHV), many trade and cinemas. It was increased in 2003 and extends on 90.000 m ². It currently comprises 200 trade and receives 20 million visitors approximately each year. With the image of its environment, the center proposes a resolutely top-of-the-range commercial offer.
At the same time as the shopping mall, the joint ownership of Chesnay-Trianon was built. Vaster Joint ownership of Europe, this one gathers 7.500 dwellings for more than 18.000 inhabitants and extends on the two communes from the Chesnay and Rocquencourt (Yvelines also). The property developer was Robert de Balkany and the architect Claude Balik.
The opening of the shopping mall was commented on by Jean Baudrillard, which published shortly after the Consumer society , a major work of the French Sociologie. This whole of commercial Urbanisme forms, with the shopping mall, true a new Ville. The inhabitants of Parly 2 are the Parlysiens .
The name of “Parly 2” has nothing to do with Parly, common located in the department of the Yonne and the area Burgundy. The initial name of this real estate transaction (1967) was “Paris II” and had to be modified in front of the opposition of the Parisian elected officials; new name is also inspired by the name of Marly (- the-King) (Yvelines). Today one speaks also simply about “Parly”, or in a more familiar language, about P2.
A vast project of extension and restoration aims at giving Parly 2 to the last style, in particular by entirely reorganizing its accesses and its carpark. Several tens of million euros will be invested in the years which come in order to reposition a center located in the middle of the one of the richest zones of chalandises of France.
