Parking brake
The parking brake , or parking brake , is more commonly called brake hand .
Indeed whereas the brake of a vehicle is handled conventionally with the feet, the parking brake him starts originally with the hands.
Its role is not to slow down the vehicle in the direction to slow down it, but simply to guarantee its immobilization with the stop. Thus it makes it possible to leave a car stopped inclined, engine extinct.
Principle
The system of the hand brake, to function, uses the bodies allocated with the brake. That it is with disc or drum, the principle is to block one or more wheels on same a Essieu, in order to prevent the rotary movement, and thus displacement, vehicle. Less solicited than the traditional screw-locking device, a simple cable makes it possible to actuate the device. In the case of disc brake, of the plates viennents to grip the discs empéchant them to turn, and on the brakes drum, the brake linings (or jaws) are plated on the drum also preventing their rotation. Mainly present on the aft wheels, the hand brake can be gone up on the nose gear wheels. In general, it is ordered by actuating a handle laid out between the seats before car, but of the alternatives appeared hand brakes with the foot (one actuates a pedal on the floor - at Mercedes for example), with the instrument panel (as on the Citroen 2CV or GS…). One henceforth finds hand brakes automatic which are ordered electrically for example.
According to the systems and the type of vehicle, the effectiveness of the hand brake can be tiny. One reinforces his role then is with a hold (provided series in the Citroen 2CV) or then by engaging a speed in the Gear box of the vehicle, the compression of the engine uses then the phenomenon of driving Frein to prevent the rotary movement of the wheels by the simple force of gravity (inclined car trained downwards).
In the event of failure of the total system of braking, the hand brake then can, by taking account of its less effectiveness, to be used as emergency brake, to stop the vehicle, or to slow down it.
