Park of Dakar

The station of Dakar is a railway station located at Dakar (Senegal) on the place of the renamed Station Dakar-Niger Place of the Rifleman on August 23rd 2004.

History

Of colonial style, the first station was built in 1885, after that of Saint-Louis (1883). Wanted by Faidherbe, the railway line Dakar/Saint-Louis - the first of the West Africa - was inaugurated on July 6th 1885. The current station was built between 1913 and 1914 and was brought into service in June 1914.

Installation of the place

The station is near the landing stage of Gorée.

On the place, a monument pays homage to Dupont and Demba, the porpoise French and the Senegalese Tirailleur. Previously this statue was vis-a-vis the National Assembly, today place of Soweto.

Rail traffic

In addition to the Small suburban train, two broad outlines only are in service. One, the Railroad of Dakar-Niger, makes it possible to the travellers to rejoin Bamako (Mali) in 36 H, twice by week. The other, bound for Saint-Louis ensures only goods transport. A connection Ziguinchor (Casamance) - Dakar is being studied.
