Park of Cherbourg

The Gare of Cherbourg is a railway station located on the common French of Cherbourg-Octeville (department of the Manche). It is the second station of Basse-Normandie after Caen. The station is at the end of the Ligne Paris-Cherbourg.

History

Construction of the station and architecture of origin

Served since Paris by the Company of the West, the station is built at the request of Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte and is inaugurated by the imperial couple in August 1858. In the beginning, this station was not only one station passangers but also a goods station and a marshalling yard.

The station is composed of a building of reception of 40 meters length and two perpendicular buildings, each one being 80 meters long. It was renovated with taken again plusieures.

Evolution of the building and the infrastructures

At the beginning of the 20th century, the station of Cherbourg accommodated international trains and pullman-car expresses so that the travellers can travel by the steamers of the company of the Cunard Line for the the United States and the the United Kingdom. Starting from 1928, a new station was built by the architect Rene Levavasseur on the port of Cherbourg: the transatlantic station. It is completed and inaugurated in 1933 by the president Albert Lebrun. The transatlantic station will be abandoned in Années 1970. In March 1971, the station of Cherbourg accommodated turbotrains to reinforce the connection Paris-Cherbourg. The beginning of the Years 1990, large work made it possible to improve the connection Paris-Cherbourg by removing many level crossings and by electrifying the line in 25 Kv. This work was completed in June 1996.
