Biography

Park Chan-wook is born on August 23rd 1963 with Seoul. He studies the Philosophie at the university of Sogang, rested by the Jesuits. But the department, dominated by the analytical Philosophy, not offering the courses of Esthétique that he wanted to study for a long time, he finds his center of interest in the cinema after having seen Cold sweats of Alfred Hitchcock (with the meeting of which he meets his future wife) before creating the Sogang film community with other film enthusiasts, very rare at the time, which met thanks to the list of the readers marked on the books of cinema in the library of its university.

In 1988, it starts to work in cinema industry by carrying out various trades and while saving to invest in a first feature film which it would like to carry out. For this period he works in particular for Yoo Young-Jin on Kkamdong and meets the future realizer with success Kwak Jae-yong which takes it as assistant.

He turns in 1992 The Moon Is… The Sun' S Dream , an urban drama being held in the mediums of the crime, the mode and the prostitution of the town of Pusan. The film is a serious commercial failure.

It becomes critic then film. Thus in 1994 it publit a collection of these criticisms Vidéodrome: charm discrete to look at the films and makes an appearance (with Kwak Jae-yong) in Mascara of Lee Hun whereas he always seeks to turn.

It makes in 1997 its second film Trio whose scenario is cosigné by his/her friend Lee MOO-Young with which it will continue its collaboration. After two years of cinematographic inactivity it carries out Judgment , short-measuring a 26 minutes on the collapse of a department store of Seocho-dong which made more than 500 dead. He violently criticizes the cynicism and the selfishness of the families of the victims. The film is selected with the Festival of Clermont-Ferrand.

Little time after Myung Films proposes to him to adapt the novel DMZ of Park Blood-yun around the border between the two Corées. It thus carries out Joint Security Area , a political thriller with the burst narration. Park has a comfortable budget and collaborates in particular with Lee MOO-Young and of the scenario writers Jung Sung-san and Kim Hyeon-seok. The film attracts more than five million spectators and becomes the second larger success of the history of the Korean cinema. Park receives many prices of which several with the Asian Festival of Deauville and is essential like a major scenario writer of the new Korean cinema.

He collaborates then with Lee MOO-Young for the scenarios of The Anarchists and The Humanist . They join to form with other realizers (Bae Chang-Ho, Kwak Jae-yong, Lee Young-jae) production company EGG Films directed by the producer Ji Young-jun who offers a great freedom to them.

The first project of EGG is the shifted comedy has Odd Coils Triangle realized by Lee MOO-Young.

Thanks to the success of its preceding film, Park can leave its old project Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance , a violent drama and black treaty in a radical way. Very discussed, the film will be rejected by part of the public but is supported by the festivals, in particular the Far East Film, the Etrange Festival and the Festival of police Cognac Film.

In 2003, Park Chan-wook carries out N.E.P.A.L. (Never Ending Peace And Love) , part of the film If You Were Me in which took part of many other scenario writers. This project created by the Commission of the Human rights of Korea denounces discrimination.

EGG films by-product its fifth feature film, Old Servant boy ; a adapation of the manga of Tsuchiya Garon and Minegishi Nobuaki. The film is an important public and critical success and is worth in Park to receive the Grand Prix of the Cannes festival.

In 2004, it carries out Coupez (Cut) one of the parts of the film 3 extremes .

In 2005, it leaves Lady Revenge which buckles the triptych on the revenge started by Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Old Boy .

He is adherent militant of PDT (Democratic party of the work of Korea), political party extreme-left which remains minority with the Congress. Within the framework of the presidential election of 2002, it made a tele campaign to support the candidate of its party.
