Parish of Evangeline

The parish of Evangeline , sometimes written Évangéline (English: Evangeline Parish ), in Louisiana was created by the scission of the Paroisse of Saint-Landry in 1824. It is named in the honor of the poem Evangéline of Longfellow. It is one of the 22 parishes of the official area of the Acadiane.

The parish has a surface of 1.721 km ² of emerged ground and 40 km ² of water. It is wedged between the Paroisse of the Rapids in north, the Paroisse of Avoyelles in the North-East, the Paroisse of Saint-Landry in the east, the Paroisse of Acadie in the south and the Paroisse of Allen in the west.

Six highways square the parish: the federal highway (U.S. Highway) n° 167 as well as the highways of Louisiana (Louisiana Highway) n° 10,13 and 29.

Demography

At the time of the census of the year 2000, the 35.434 inhabitants of the parish were divided into 70,42% of “White”, 28,56% of “Blacks” and Afro-Américains, 0,23% of Amerindian, 0,14% of Asiatique S, 0,01% of Polynésie NS and Mélanésie NS like 0,18% of not indexed so above and 0,46% métissées people.

The parish counted 25,71% which speaks the French or the French cajun at the house, that is to say 8.345 people speaking at least once per day the “language about Molière”. Moreover, there is of 290 inhabitants (0,89%) who speak a creole based on French.

In the parish, the population pyramid (always in 2000) was presented as follows:

  • 5.490 people were the minor ones (less than 18 years) that is to say 29,60%;

  • 1.986 people were young adults (from 18 to 24 years) that is to say 9,60%;

  • 6.558 people were young labor forces (from 25 to 44 years) that is to say 27,60%;

  • 5.062 people were growing old labor forces (from 45 to 65 years) that is to say 20,40%;

  • 2.264 people were people in retirement age (more than 65 years) that is to say 12,80%.

The Middle Age of the citizens of the parish was thus 34 years, moreover, the parish counts 17.770 people of female sex (either 50,15%) and 17.664 people of male sex (or 49,85%).

The average revenue by anybody amounts to $20 532 (in 2006) whereas 32,20% of the inhabitants live under the poverty line (federal index).

The parish is divided into nine cities and villages: Basile, Chestnut, Mamou, Prick Meadow, Bayou Chicot, Turkey Creek, City Platte, Lone Fucks and Saint-Landry.
