History

Which is Bishop the origin of the Parigné-l patronym'?

PATRIACUM, PATRINIACUS, PARIGNIACUM EPISCOPI: these various names date from the Gallo-Roman time, according to the name of a Roman “Patrinius”. It initially indicated a small field granted to this Gallo-Roman, then evolved/moved with the wire of time and the centuries.

Two assumptions with the current name: per ignitus : burned place, set fire to, pro vineum : place planted in vines, which was true formerly. It is in the wood of Loudon that the history from Parigné-l' Bishop begins, to last extremely old. There is only vague information over the primitive Celtic time, before the Roman conquest.

One can however affirm, without fear to be mistaken, that our region, glaze of vast forests and of many rivers, had to be populated of very good hour. At the beginning of the 7th century, the bishops of Mans, from all the preceding donations, became the Masters of the major part of the parish and had even a manor seigneurial, whose situation remains unknown. It is at this period that the name of the BISHOP was added to the original patronym. Towards 650, Alain, rich lord, gave to Hadoing saint, bishop of Mans and with his church the ground of Loudun.
