Priorale clunisienne
In 973 the count Lambert of Trawl-net founded a Cloître which as of 999 was placed by the bishop of Auxerre under the authority of the Abbaye of Cluny, which made some, until the end of the Old Mode, a priory clunisien. No trace of a first church (10th century) is had. Starting from the beginning of the 11th century, a building was built that the recent excavations, led by Gilles Rollier, made it possible to discover; this construction probably ended in the Western solid mass (porch and two bell-towers) at the beginning of the 12th century. A new construction, much more ambitious, did not certainly begin before the medium from the 12th century, and started then with the construction of a large apse with déambulatoire, which included initially the preceding apse. Work progressed with an extreme slowness, and were not completed before the beginning of the 14th century (Gothic stage of the principal bell-tower, replaced with 19th by a pastiche néo-novel). The final breathlessness of the building site made that work stopped whereas less than half of the nave envisaged had been built, which left a building which appears curiously proportioned.
Since the end of the 19th century, Paray-le-Monial and its church are one of the places of the most attended Pèlerinage France. The object of these pilgrimages is the worship of the Sacré-coeur, due to the visions of Marguerite-Marie Alacoque in second half of the 17th century and more still to the action of the Jesuit Claude Colombière.
The church of today is a basilica whose principal building counts three spans with a transept of only one nave, two small turns in the west and a large tower of transept. The church has an overall length of 63,5 m (including the hall and the Eastern Vault belonging to the radiating chapels) and a width of 22,35 m (without the transept). With its 40,50 m compared to the almost square Nave (22 m length until crossing) the transept gives the impression to be disproportionate. The great nave of the principal building has a height of 22 m, including the tower transept and total height of the church is of 56 Mr.
The chorus takes as a starting point the model of Cluny with a déambulatoire and radiating chapels.
Pilgrimage
At the 17th century, Christ appeared with a nun, Sainte Marguerite-Marie, born in a village surrounding and nun in the Monastère of the Visitation. During three large Appearance S, it presented its heart Here to him “this heart which so much loved the men and who receives in exchange only ingratitudes of those which are devoted to him”. Very quickly, Marguerite-Marie accepted the support and the spiritual councils of a Jésuite Saint Claude Colombière. De Paray-le-Monial, was born a gigantic devotion, called the worship of the Sacré-coeur. Pilgrimages were born in Paray-Le-Monial and of the sanctuaries were built with the four corners of the world, most famous (in France) being the Basilique of the Sacred Heart of Montmartre.
Today, this pilgrimage, which had seemed to fall into a relative lapse of memory, is a great success. The charismatic Renouveau made there its first session in 1975 which was continued by many meetings animated by the Communauté of Emmanuel. The Pape Jean-Paul II came there in pilgrimage in October 1985. Since 1986, the bishop of Autun entrusted the animation of this place to the Communauté of Emmanuel. The number of pilgrims does not cease growing and of the gatherings follow one another during the summer but also all the year.
