Parakeet of Newton
The Perruche of Newton ( Psittacula exsul ) was small a Psittacidé now disappeared endemic from the forests of the island Rodrigues.
It was observed for the first time by François Leguat, which was with the head of a group of eight Huguenot S which colonized the island of 1691 with 1693. According to its descriptions, this bird was then in great number. The following mention to make with the parakeet is the fact of the mathematician Alexandre Guy Pingré, who travelled to Rodrigues in 1761 to observe the Transit of Venus. It notes that the bird became rare.
A specimen was sent by Sir Edward Newton (colonial administrator of Maurice) to his/her brother Alfred, who officially recorded the bird in 1872. The last alive individual was observed in 1875.
Two complete specimens and of the fossilized bones were preserved. The extinction of the species was probably caused by the conjugation of hunting and destruction of its habitat.
