Paraderris elliptica

Paraderris elliptica is the name of a species of plants Légumineuse S originating in Southeast Asia and islands of the Pacifique such as the New Guinea from which one extracts the Roténone.

It belonged in the past to the kind Derris but was famous recently in " Paraderris elliptica"

Use

The Racine S of this plant contain the Roténone, a Insecticide extremely and a Ichtyotoxique (Poison for the Poisson S).

Natives of New Guinea practice the Nivrée, a form of fishing, by crushing the roots of Paraderris then by throwing them to water. The weakened or killed fish float on surface where they can be easily sins.

In spite of its toxicity, Derris is a source of food by the Larve S of many species of Lepidoptera such as Batrachedra amydraula.
