Paracelse

Paracelse (born Philippus Theophrastus Aureolus Bombastus von Hohenheim in 1493 with Einsiedeln in central Switzerland - 1541) was a Alchimiste and Médecin Suisse.

His/her father, Wilhelm von Hohenheim, are an alchemist and a doctor. Of 1502 with 1507, it teaches with his/her son the rudiments of the thought Humaniste. Paracelse is interested then in the Alchimie, under the crook of Trithème.

In the Years 1520, Paracelse, which is made name thus because it considers its knowledge higher than that of Celse, critical the principles of the Médecine established. For this itinerant doctor, the idea of a cosmic life cycle founded on the Cooking and the elements aristotelicians are false and deserve a revision. In spite of its bad reputation, due to its caustic personality and its radical religious beliefs, he convinces the doctors of the courses of Europe to give up their old principles and to seek the new ones.

Alchemy

Why the theories of Paracelse essential are, in spite of the Personnalité of the man? The historians still discuss it, but the advent of the Distillation seems to have contributed to the change. The technique was essential at the end of the Moyen-âge in the community of the alchemists, and of many natural products were tested. Starting from the Substance S natural edible, the such Fennel, the Nutmeg and the cloves, the chemists always obtain three types of products: a volatile fluid, or “spirit”, an oily substance and a solid residue . On this basis, the chemists propose three new elements to replace the Four elements of Aristote:
  • the mercury (i.e. the gasoline of the vaporous fluids, and not the chemical element which bears today this name), which gives the Arôme to the Aliment
  • sulfur (gasoline of the oily substances, without relation either with the chemical element), which conveys the moisture and the Goût sweetened
  • the salt (gasoline of the solids, different from the salt of table), which determines the taste and the consistency, and which binds the two other elements, normally antagonistic.

The doctors are convinced whereas the Digestion is not a cooking, as they had supported previously, but a Fermentation.

Surgery and experimental medicine

In medicine, Paracelse taught the theory of the signatures, but its ideas all were not well included/understood at its time.

Many today are those which referent with its work. In fact he is also regarded as one of the fathers of experimental medicine. He is at the origin of the emancipation of medicine compared to the old speculative beliefs. For him only true medicine must be based on the experiment. To try out Nature to relieve the suffering of its similar, it is what it did during all its life. Surgeon, it was largely advances some over his time, recommended to maintain the wounds clean. Instead of making suffer while deterging or by burning the flesh, he preferred to use the " mumie" , composed containing essential oils. Or alchemical processes such as copper salts or the money.

Paracelse and Rosicrucian brotherhood

The proclamations Rosicrucian brotherhood (1614 and 1615) are claimed explicitly of Paracelse and its alchemical writings. But there does not exist any historical document accrediting the existence of a Rosicrucian brotherhood order at the time of Paracelse, nor moreover with that of the publication of proclamations, that the historians regard as a literary fiction.,

Paracelse as Slovakia

He lived in Slovakia in order to collect samples of gold, money and other minerals in 1521 with Banská Bystrica, in 1526 and 1527 with Smolník and in 1537 in Bratislava. On a wall of the Palate primatial, of Bratislava, a plate commemorates its presence where he is written „In hac platea habitavit A.D. 1537 D.D. Paracelsus de Hohenheim “. Thereafter, it will go to Vienna then to Salzburg to die there.
