Papilionidae

The family of the papilionidés ( Papilionidae ) is a family of diurnal butterflies which includes/understands approximately 570 species in the world. They are generally large butterflies with the colors sharp. The majority have a “tail” on each posterior wing. Although the majority is of tropical origin, one can meet some on all the continents except for the Antarctic. It is in this family that one can observe the largest butterflies of the world (kind Troides ) originating in Australasia.

Papilionidés differ from the other families of butterflies by at least three anatomical characters:

  • the caterpillars have behind the head a body érectile fourchu called osmeterium. When a caterpillar is attacked, it takes an arched posture, the emitting set up osmeterium of the odorous substances containing of terpenes.
  • the second anal vein on the posterior wing reaches the edge of the wing whereas it amalgamates with the first in the other families.
  • the cervical scales meet under the neck.

It is divided into 3 subfamilies:

  • baroniinés (subfamily the whose only representative is Baronia brevicornis a Mexican butterfly)
  • parnassiinés (subfamily of the Apollo ( Parnassius apollo )); often classified like family with whole share Parnassiidae.
  • papilioninés (subfamily of the swallowtail butterfly ( Papilio swallowtail butterfly ))

One counts of them 11 species present in Europe and 18 at the Canada.
