Paolo Baffi
Paolo Baffi (born the August 5th 1911 with Broni, in Lombardy - died the August 4th 1989 with Rome) was Gouverneur of Banque of Italy of 1975 with 1979.
Biography
After having been Master attending the University Bocconi of Milan, Paolo Baffi between with the Bank of Italy in 1936, becoming responsible for the Studies and, of 1960 with 1975, managing director.
In 1972 it becomes corresponding Accademia dei Lincei.
Appointed governor of the Bank of Italy in August 1975 by the president of the council Aldo Moro. It replaces Guido Carli.
In March 1979, it is blamed at the time of an investigation into the absence of vigilance on the institutes of credit, diligentée by the examining magistrate Antonio Alibrandi and the substitute of the public prosecutor of Rome Luciano Infelisi. The vice-director of the Bank of Italy, Mario Sarcinelli, is even accused. A wave of indignation falls down on the magistrature of Rome. Baffi and Sarcinelli receive innumerable demonstrations of support. Thereafter, it are both completely put out of cause by the instruction, but Baffi which escapes shame from the arrest because of its age, prefers to resign of its load of governor in September 1979. Before yielding its function, it suggests the name of its successor Carlo Azeglio Ciampi with the president of the Council Francesco Cossiga.
It receives the honorary title of governor and, until its death in August 1989, he is professor at the university Sapienza of Rome and vice-president of the Banque of the international payments (BIS).
The library of the Banque of Italy bears its name since 1990.
