Pantera

Pantera was an American group originating in Arlington, Texas, rested by the brothers Abbott, Dimebag Darrell (Guitare) and Vinnie Paul (Batterie), and credit of 1981 with 2003. If, at the beginning, the group shows certain characteristics connected to the Glam metal, its music concerns above all the Heavy-metal. However, starting from 1990, the group takes a radical turning towards the Thrash metal, which leads it has to become one of the founders and a major actor of the Power metal. The journalist Jason Birchmeier of All Music Guide defined Pantera as being “ one of best groups metal of the Nineties ”. They occupied the 45ème place of the classification larger VH1 of the “ 100 groups of Hard rock ”, and in the 5th place of the classification of the “ 10 better groups of heavy metal of all time ”.

Because of long conflicts within the group, Pantera separates in 2003. The following year, the former guitarist of the group, Dimebag Darrell, is killed on scene whereas it made a concert with its new group, Damageplan.

History

1981-1987: Beginnings

Pantera is formed in 1981 by the beater Vinnie Paul Abbott, his brother, the guitarist Dimebag Darrell Abbott (called “ Diamond Darrell ” to the exit of Far Beyond Driven ), then joined by the bass player Tommy Bradford, the guitarist Terry Glaze and the singer Donnie Hart During this period, Terence Lee leaves the group, Pantera puts himself in search of a new singer.

The group engages temporarily the singers Matt the Love and David Peacock, before finding Phil Anselmo. Before joining Pantera, Phil Anselmo officiated in two groups, Samhain and Razorwhite. At the time of a jam session with Pantera, Anselmo gets along very well with the members of the group and takes the vacancy quickly. When research ends, the members of the groups decide to seriously re-examine their image and their sound glam metal. Vinnie Paul notices at a meeting of the group “ This clothing magic do not play the music. It is we who play it. Let us leave them and carry comfortable things: jean, tee-shirt, and let us see where they carry out us.

1990: Cowboys from Hell

Little time after the exit of Power Metal , Dimebag Darrell is requested to replace guitarist of the group Megadeth. The guitarist refuses the offer: the place is given to Marty Friedman

Pantera was pushed back “ 28 times by large labels ”. But when Mark Ross, representative of Atco Records sees the group playing “ Hurricane Hugo ”, it is impressed by their performance. It strongly suggests with its owner making sign Pantera on the label. Atco Records accepts, and fine 1989, the group records an album for them in Pantego Studios.

Left the July 24th 1990, Cowboys from Hell continues the evolution of the sound of Pantera towards more brutality. The group is detached from the style glam metal to go towards the Power metal and the Groove metal; the " power groove" according to the group. Dimebag Darrell uses complex fronts and punctuates the majority of the songs with a solo. The album marks a turning in the discography of the group, which then regards this album as the “official” beginning of Pantera.

1992-1994: Vulgar Display off Power & Far Beyond Driven

Vulgar Display off Power leaves the February 25th 1992, and brings a change to the level of the song, in particular that of Phil Anselmo much madder, on a sound of guitar very heavy. While some critical speak in praise of the Grunge, others adulate Pantera, in particular for Vulgar Display off Power . The musical critics, the fans, regard this album as best of Pantera.

In 1995 Anselmo leaves the album one of these first Side-project S, Down. Down is a Supergroupe consisted of Anselmo to the song, Pepper Keenan and Kirk Windstein with the guitars, Jimmy Bower with the battery, and Todd Strange with low. The first album of Down, NOLA , leaves the September 19th 1995.

Regular in their rate/rhythm of exit of albums - every two Pantera years The Great Southern Trendkill the May 7th 1996 leaves. The group turns throughout the year while occurring to the Japan, in Australia and New Zealand, before turning over to turn to the the United States. Phil Anselmo records the parts of song to the studio of the Trent Reznor with the Orleans News while the remainder of the group records in Texas, which maintains even more the distance from the singer compared to the remainder of the group. Compared to the old albums, the voice of Anselmo is done even darker. Drug is the principal subject of The Great Southern Trendkill , whose topic is mainly evoked on the songs “ Suicide Notes Pt. I ” and “ Through Living room Me (Hell' S Wrath) ”. The most popular song of the album is “ Drag the Waters ”. It is then the only song of the album which will be the object of a video clip.

In 1997, " Suicide Notes Pt. I " is nominated for the Best Metal Performance Grammy . This same year, Pantera plays in first part of KIS in March, then turns to the Mexico, the Chile and in Argentine. Lastly, the group takes part in the Ozzfest.

1996-2000: Live overdose and album

The July 13rd 1996, Anselmo is victim of a faintness following a overdose of heroin one hour after a concert in Texas. Its heart stops beating during 5 minutes. The ambulance men manage a puncture of adrenalin to him and send it to the hospital. Anselmo will be excused near the group but this incident does nothing but increase the tensions within Pantera. The revelation of the heroin consumption is a shock in the group.

The only album “ live ” of the group, Official Live 101 Proof , leaves the live July 29th comprising 14 titles “ ” and 2 new titles. The video third, 3: Watch It Go , leaves the November 11th. It is classified first of the charts Billboard Music Video . Pantera finishes the year with a mini-round in the United States. The group is named with the Best Metal Performance Grammy for “ Cemetary Gates ” album Official Live 101 Proof .

2000: Reinventing the steel

Pantera turns over in studio in 2000 to record what will be the last album of Pantera. Reinventing the Steel , leaves on March 14th. It arrives at the 4th place of Billboard 200 and included “ Revolution Is My Name ” and “ Goddamn Electric ”, the last is a featuring group with Kerry King, performance of the group recorded with the Ozzfest in Dallas. “ Revolution Is My Name ” arrives at the second place for the nomination of the best performance metal at the Grammy Awards in 2001.

The group leaves in round to the the United States, in South Korea, Australia, and Europe. The European round is curtailed and the participation of the group in the festival Tattoo the planet is cancelled, following the attacks of the September 11th, 2001. It will be the last time that the members of the group play together. Of return to Texas, the group envisages to leave a new video clip during the summer 2002 and to record a new album the following year, but none of these projects will be carried out. Anselmo makes many side-projects, and becomes the leader of Superjoint Ritual what will create tensions with Darrell and Paul which would like to see it centring itself on Pantera. A second album of Down, Down II: In Bustle in Your Hedgerow , leaves in 2002. Vinnie Paul declares that Phil Anselmo wanted to stop some time following the attacks of September 11th, Anselmo continuous to however play with Superjoint Ritual and Down. The Abbott brothers think that it is time to make a “pause” with Pantera.

The group officially separates in 2003 when the Abbott brothers conclude that Anselmo will turn over never again in Pantera. The Abbott brothers declare that they have several times tempted to speak in Phil Anselmo to reform Pantera, which lunatic Anselmo.

In July 2004, Vulgar Display off Power becomes double disc platinizes and The Great Southern Trendkill becomes platinum disc the next month.

2004: The murder of Dimebag Darrell

Following the separation of Pantera, the Abbott brothers decide to form a new group of the name of Damageplan with Pat Lachman with the song and Bob Zilla with low. They leave an album the name of New Found Power in February 2004. The members of Damageplan leave then on the roads, to promote their album.

The December 8th 2004, to the whole beginning in a concert deprived with the Alrosa villa in Columbus in the Ohio, Nathan Scale, 25 years, goes up on scene, car and keep silent Dimebag Darrell, a fan - Nathan Bray, 23 years -, an employee of the club - Erin Halk, 29 years -, and one of the bodyguard of the group - Jeff “ Mayhem ” Thompson, 40 years - before being cut down by the police officer James Niggemeyer.

Anselmo went to Texas to try to attend the funeral, but it waited 5 days in a hotel room where it tried several times to call Vinnie Paul without obtaining answer. Rita Haney, the boyfriend of Dimebag Darell, just meant to him that it would kill it if it saw it. Anselmo is expressed in connection with this death on its official site, and turned a video where he excuses himself, near the family of Dimebag Darell, of the declarations which he made on Dimebag after the separation of Pantera. During an interview for Crave Music , one asked Vinnie Paul if one day it could be reconciled with Anselmo, it answers: “ Absolutely not. It is all. ”.

The reasons of the assassination of Dimebag Darrell are obscure. Phil Anselmo is shown by the family to be the person in charge of dead of Dimebag Darrell, because he said during an interview for the magazine Metal Hammer that “ Dimebag deserves to be tabassé severely ” and this one week before the murder of Dimebag Darrell. One says as wrongly as Nathan Gale would have killed Dimebag Darrell because it would be at the origin of the dissolution of Pantera. However, at the time of several investigations one will note that Nathan Gale did not have any CD of Pantera and apparently never an object having any bond with the group had if it is not the album of Damageplan found in its car. The night club was also blamed, because for less than 50 dollars, safety could have found the weapon with a metal detector.

The emotion is very present and a few days only after the murder, a memorial is carried out by the fans with Arlington in Texas where will come to express Zakk Wylde, Eddie Van Halen like Vinnie Paul. Dave Mustaine (Megadeth), Ozzy Osbourne (Black Sabbath), Jonathan Davis (KoЯn) and other personalities representative of the heavy metal in general paid homage to Dimebag Darell.

Criticisms

Exhorder

Pantera in general has sudden criticisms on behalf of the world of the heavy metal and the group of US power metal Exhorder in particular. Indeed, certain fans show Pantera to have stolen in Exhorder the sound groove metal for which it became famous. Whereas the change of Pantera style on Cowboy from Hell was marketed before the beginnings of Exhorder, Slaughter in the Vatican , Exhorder financed two demonstrations in the end of the year 1980, which several fans regard as the true birth of the musical style that Pantera popularized.

All Music Guides watch several elements in the beginnings of Exhorder which could explain its lack of success compared to Pantera. In dissension with the fact that Exhorder is “Pantera without the good songs”, AMG, in its criticism of Slaughter in the Vatican , declares that “it would be righter to say than they are Pantera without major”. They add that the title of the beginnings of Exhorder, as well as the cover not very subtle of their album, “did not certainly help them”.

However, certain fans and critics dispute the fact that Pantera could " voler" the sound of Exhorder. Brian Davis, a collaborator with webradio KNAC, expresses what he thinks of the problem:

Exhorder claims mainly with being recognized because Pantera would have stolen their sound to them. They is really conneries. There are light resemblances in the style of guitar, and on the occasion, the singer Kyle Thomas shouts what will inspire Pantera, but to say that Pantera is a clone of Exhorder, it is anything.

Although in the beginning he declared that Pantera had swindled them, the former singer of Exhorder, Kyle Thomas, declared that it made fun of criticisms and that it had enough of it to see the name of Exhorder associated with that with Pantera. He added that him and the members of Pantera were good friends accustomed to turn together and that he cries the loss of Dimebag Darrell.

Megadeth

In addition to being marked to have stolen the sound of Exhorder, Dave Mustaine founder of Megadeth (and former guitarist of Metallica) said at MTV in 1994:

When James and me we met, we created a style of guitar that everyone plays today. I will not say a name not to make them promotion. OK, let us say " panthère" in Spanish. Of nothing, the guy the VO: " You' Re Welcome, guys." We could as well make cook to dine to them for them or to push their small wheelbarrow at the bank for them.

Anecdotes

  • the small pocket of Vulgar Display off Power cost the group only 10 dollars: it is the thin reward given to a SDF so that it is caught a punch for the photograph.

  • Pantera played first edition of the Ozzfest on the principal scene, twice; the group also played second Ozzfest in 1997 and fifth in 2000.

  • Until the end of their career, the members of Pantera were known for their excessive drinking bouts and their vices. They even acquired an official alcoholic drink, the “ Black Tooth Grin ”. The Black Tooth Grin (or “ Black Tooth ”), which was baptized thus according to the words of the song of Megadeth Sweating Bullets ”, is a mixture of Crown Royal, Seagram 7 or Whiskey (sometimes both are used at the same time) and of Coca-Cola.

  • According to the beater Vinnie Paul, during a concert with San Diego, an unknown disturbed Phil Anselmo at the time of a concert. Anselmo then encouraged the public with the “ to type and transfer it concert ". Consequently, the group was prosecuted by the father of the unknown which would have called the manager of Pantera and would have said to him “ Laissez me just 5 minutes with this Phil Anselmo and I would show to him who am the large dad here ” Anselmo retorted then “ Donnez me just 5 minutes all alone with this guy and I would make hoot his bottom ”. The song “ 5 Minutes Alone ” was born from this experiment. For The Best off Pantera: Far Beyond the Great Southern Cowboys , the group took again the song “ Hole in the Sky
