Panmunjeom

Panmunjeom ( P' anmunjŏm , 판문점 in Hangul) in the province of Gyeonggi is a village of 800 m ² of surface, located on the border between the North Korea and the South Korea, where in 1953 the armistice was signed which put an end to the Guerre of Korea. The hutments where this agreement was signed are always present, although it is in the north of the line of demarcation which crosses the demilitarized zone (DMZ), the table of the negotiations itself is divided into two! Panmunjeom is one of the rare vestiges of the Cold war. The hutments of Panmunjeom are still used at ends of negotiations, as well by the the United Nations and the army North-Korean, as by the authorities of the two countries.

The crossing of the line of demarcation which crosses Panmunjeom is more allowed since the incident of August 18th, 1976, in which two American soldiers found death, killed with blow of axe by a soldier North-Korean.

Panmunjeom is located one kilometer at the north of the homonymous village and remains under control of UNO. In this village the " is located; Bridge of No return " : a passage between the two Corées which, in 1953, was used primarily for the prisoner exchange. At this time, of the thousands of North-Korean fled already towards the South and turned the back on Communism. The Koreans of the South who took the opposite way towards North at the same time lost their right to repossess to the South.
