Panafrican festival of the cinema and the television of Ouagadougou
The Panafrican Festival of the cinema and the television of Ouagadougou (FESPACO) is one of the greatest African festivals of Cinéma. It is held every two years in the capital of the Burkina Faso.
Presentation
The objective of the festival is of:- to support the diffusion of all works of the African cinema,
- to allow the contacts and the exchanges between professionals of the cinema and audio-visual,
- to contribute to rise, the development and the safeguard of the African cinema, as a conscientisation and education, means of expression.
Apart from the organization of the festival in itself, the public corporation in load of the FESPACO has also like role to organize projections with nonlucrative goal in direction of the rural areas in partnership with the ONG, associations, the schools and other public institutions and private; to promote the African cinema in the international festivals and to organize various demonstrations around the cinema.
The FESPACO is helped financially by the International agency of the francophonie (AIFF), the Programme of the United Nations for the development (UNDP), UNESCO, UNICEF, the European Union and the co-operation of several countries (Germany, Burkina Faso, Denmark, Finland, France, Netherlands, République of China, Sweden).
History
The festival was created in 1969 with Ouagadougou on the initiative of a group of film enthusiasts under name Semaine of the African cinema . Five countries were represented: the Senegal, the Ivory Coast, the the Upper Volta (current Burkina Faso), the Niger and the Cameroun. The France and the Netherlands were also represented. 23 films were presented. In 1970, the second week of the African cinema was organized with 9 African countries (Algérie, Tunisia, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Niger, Senegal, Mali, the Upper Volta, Ghana) and 40 projected films.In 1972, the festival takes the title of Panafrican Festival of cinema of Ouagadougou (FESPACO). The editions follow one another in 1973, 1976, and it becomes bi-annual starting from 1979. In 1972 égalament is created the Grand Prix of the festival which bears the name of “standard of Yennenga”, in reference to the myth founder of the empire Mossi.
