Palpatine

Palpatine (84 Av. BY - 11 a. BY) is a character of the universe of the Star Wars which appear in all the episodes safe in the Épisode IV.

Successively senator, chancellor supreme then Emperor, it is in fact the Master Sith called Dark Sidious . He is the Master of Dark Vador. He is the initiator of a vast plot which will bring the fall of the République and the proclamation of the Galactic Empire of which he will be the Empereur Suprême.

Origin

Originating in the small planet Naboo in the Median Edge, it was born in 84 Av. BY, and was the Senator sector Chommel (which contains the system of Naboo) under the reign of king Veruna and the first mandate of the queen Padmé Amidala.

It is excessively difficult to know details concerning the childhood and the period of innocence of Palpatine (although more " doués" know its history). All the documents of time relative to its family and her youth have " mystérieusement" missing. One is however authorized to think that it had to grow in a family of the middle-class living in the countryside of Naboo (it even acknowledged to him to have " run in the plains being gamin").

When he was yet only one Naboo young person, its future Master, Dark Plagueis, felt the power which he could have if he were initiated at the obscure side and decided to exploit it before Jedi by making of Palpatine his apprentice. Nobody knew the true identity of this last because Plagueis erased all the files relating to it and took it along with him.

After long years of training, it from now on named Dark Sidious assassinated its Master in his sleep, because it did not have too any more the choice… Indeed, its Master had acquired control on the Midday-chlorien S and projected to give birth to a perfect apprentice. Sidious had three possibilities: to face the future apprentice and to show that it was even more perfect, to never flee while hoping not to be caught up with, or then to assassinate Plagueis, which it made, before not returning on Naboo, under the name of Palpatine.

However, doing that, Sidious could never really know the secrecy of the handling of midday-chloriens. He thus interpreted immortality by the cloning, technique which he practiced on itself (if he would come one day has to die) even if it were not him which ordered the creation of an large army of clones for the republic, much later ( the Attack of the clones ).

Political ascendance

“Mysteriously” become senator of small planet of Naboo, it makes an agreement with the Fédération of the trade, under the appearance of Dark Sidious , so that it invades this one (first phase of its vast and complex plan). Benefitting from the Corruption generalized of the galactic Senate and youth of the queen Amidala, it scheme and intrigue in order to make to évincer the Chancellor Valorum and to succeed to him the supreme chancellery of the Republic, more the high authority of the executive power.

In hiding-place, he delegates to the Count Dooku, deposed Jedi, the care to carry out the creation of an army of clones to defend the Republic against separatist aimings which he takes in fact care to create and to maintain to start the war.

The day before the release of the War of the clones, it was made vote the full powerss in order to put a term at the discussions without end of the Senate. Its first action will be to create an army in order to defend the interests of the Republic against the Separatists. After many years of war, it made reorganize the Galactic Republic in the form of Empire “under the applause of the senate” which was unaware of at this time that it would be finally évincé. Palpatine autoproclama Emperor and ordered the massacre of Jedi, shown sedition towards the Republic and of plot against the Senate and the Démocratie. Devastated the Jedi Temple and the corrupted Senate, nothing nor nobody can then stop the Black Lord of Sith.

The Sith Master

In the shade, Palpatine is in fact a lord Sith called Dark Sidious and which acts to restore the glory of Sith of antan.

Apprentice of Dark Plagueis which he assassinated in his sleep, he was the Master of terrifying Dark Maul (in Episode I), of the dangerous Dark Tyranus alias the Count Dooku (in the episodes II and III) and finally of powerful the Dark Vador alias Anakin Skywalker (in the episodes III, IV, V and VI). For him, its pupils are only pawns. If he did not hesitate to sacrifice Dark Tyranus to the profit of Dark Vador, he will make some in the same way while trying to convert the young person Luke Skywalker.

Two duels with the Saber-laser are known with its credit (for those which know only films) (in the episode III). It disputed the first against the Master Jedi Mace Windu, whereas this last came to stop it in the name of the Senate accompanied by three other Jedi. After having killed the Masters Kit Fisto, Agen Kolar and Saesee Tiin, it was only found against Windu face to which it ends up losing (intentionally…), getting rid however of its adversary by its flashes of Force after having obtained the allegiance of Anakin Skywalker. The second known duel opposed it to the Master Yoda. This combat of a titanic intensity was held in the enclosure even Galactic Senate and was completed by the victory (a little by chance) of Sidious over the Master Jedi has end of force which preferred to give up the fight to wait more favourable times to demolish the Empereur . One can add besides that according to Jedi prophecy, it returned neither in Yoda, neither in Mace Windu to beat the Sith last, which could thus be beaten neither by one, nor by the other (one can make a parallel with the Nazgûl, King-Wizard of Angmar, in the Seigneur of the Rings of Tolkien, whose prophecy of Glorfindel had said that it would not die with a hand of man: no man could thus overcome it… but no man only).

The style of combat of Palpatine , is a Sith alternative of form IV (called Ataru), a very lifting school, which connects very fluid movements at the beginning, and transfers then with strange, even in the singular. The base of its style is the position of empalement, which is not only used to spit its adversary, but also to make a pretense to offset itself. One of styles of the most advanced and complex combat.

In spite of its great age (although immortal thanks to the capacity stolen to its Master combined with the cloning), it is one of Sith most frightening and most powerful which ever the galaxy knew. This Black Lord is indeed one of only Sith which succeeded in handling superbly well Ataru and especially which can “store” as much energy, vital with the use of his very advanced capacities. If powerful that it holds a single capacity that only some other Sith Lords succeeded in having. This capacity is in fact a kind of super-vortex which aspires and destroys all that is in the vicinity, plus this one more it is important is devastator and more it makes pump of energy to its user. It is the most destroying capacity of the Force and most powerful having been created. Dark Sidious precisely creates of them one which succeeds in “aspiring” all an immense fleet of stellar vessels.

The Emperor

During its reign of a score of years, the army of the Galactic Empire will continue the rebels through the galaxy and will track Jedi survivors.

The apprentice of Palpatine, Dark Vador, will accurately serve his Master until the day when it is found obliged to choose between his honesty with Sidious and the life of his son, Luke Skywalker. After having vainly tried to attract this last on the obscure side of the force, the Empereur is finally killed by Dark Vador, become again Anakin Skywalker, which precipitates it in a puit bottomless of Second Black Star and achieves by là-même its destiny of Elected official of Jedi prophecy: destruction of Sith.

The reappearance of the Master

However, the Black Lord of Sith had provided that its apprentice would betray it one day and therefore it had a top secret base sheltering of the clones of itself ready to accommodate the vital gasoline of this one which was well too powerful to be destroyed completely. Thereafter, it was killed twice but nobody really knows if it had indeed died because do not forget that in all it was destroyed three times and that each time it succeeded in reappearing. Interpret

The role of Palpatine/Dark Sidious is held in the two trilogies by the Scottish actor Ian McDiarmid. Actor shakespearien noticed and remarkable of Almeida Theater to London, one remembers in particular his interpretations of which that of Henry IV and his role in Sleepy Hollow .

In the versions 1980 and 1997, the Emperor was interpreted in the episode V by an old woman anonymous and doubled by Clive Revill.

For the French versions, the Emperor was doubled by Jean Claudio for the versions 1980 and 1997 of the episode V. Henri Virlogeux took over for episode VI. In episode I, Palpatine was entitled to two votes: that of Georges Claisse for the appearances of the “Senator Palpatine” and Jean Michaud for those of Dark Sidious. Claisse will double then the “two facets” of the character in episodes II and III like in the version 2004 of the fifth and the series Clone Wars .

In the original version of Clone Wars , it was doubled by Nick Jameson.

Significance

Sidious : contraction of the English word insidious which wants to say insidious and of the verb seduce (to allure).
Palpatine: comes from Latin palpare who wants to say to palpate, flatter and of Palatin , which is that of the seven hills of Rome where the emperors resided.

Anecdote

Of the name of Palpatine was born the Palpy nickname, comic diminutive, extremely widespread in the community Net surfer.
