Palo Alto
Palo Alto (, of the Spanish palo , “wood” and viola , “high”, or “the large tree”) is a Californian municipality in the county of Santa Clara in the south of the Péninsule of San Francisco, in the north of Silicon Valley. The city accommodates the seats of many companies of Technologie S of point, of which Hewlett-Packard; the Université of Stanford of it is close.
Palo Alto was in particular made famous for the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center, foundation where were developed many data-processing innovations such as Ethernet, Smalltalk, the impression Laser, the Graphical interface and the mouse.
Palo Alto is often indicated as being the cradle of the Silicon Valley. According to the legend, it is in a garage of this city that two students in Ph.D. in Stanford, Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard, founded Hewlett-Packard in 1939 and thus founded the Silicon Valley. The seat of HP is besides always in Palo Alto.
The city has several centers:
- Downtown Palo Alto: on University Avenue concentrate a great number of trade and restaurant
- Business District: with the crossing between California Avenue and El Camino Real one finds full with small restaurants in particular one or two French, as well as a great number of banks.
- East Palo Alto: east coast of highway 101, it is the poor district, inhabited mainly by blacks. East Palo Alto was the first commune of the United States to be itself declared in a state of bankruptcy… to 100 meters of one of the richest communes of the country.
The city is served by three stops of Caltrain: north in the south, Palo Alto, Stanford (served only at the time of the sporting events) and California Avenue. Caltrain spends approximately every half-hour (but stops only once on three in California Avenue) and makes it possible to go to San Francisco in one early hour or to San Jose in half an hour.
