Palma de Majorque (in Spanish and a Catalan, be Palma de Mallorca ), principal city of the island of Majorque (in Spanish Mallorca ), capital of the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands in Spain.

Geography

It counts approximately: 375048 inhabitants (2007), is almost half of the total population of the Balearic Islands and is located on the southern part of the island in the Baie of Palma.

History

In 858, the city is plundered by the chief Viking Hasting.

The city thrives during XIIIe and XIVe centuries as a capital of summer of the Royaume of Majorque, left the crown of Aragon. Most of the historical buildings most important go back to this period and show the characteristics of the style of the Gothic architecture, in particular the cathedral (built of 1230 to 1600) and the composite style, Moor and Catalan of the Palau of Almudaina. The archipelago of Will pull up, although largely separate of Palma, is regarded by the administration as part of the municipality.

" Palma de Mallorca" is also the name of the ducal title currently given - primarily “protocolar” in democratic Spain - granted by the king Juan Carlos to her daughter junior, the infante Cristina and with his/her husband Iñaki Urdangarin (former handballer), titrated “duke and duchess of Palma de Majorque” since their marriage the October 4th 1997.

Name of the inhabitants: palmesà/ana, ciutadà/ana.
