Palm OS

Palm OS is a Operating system for mobile devices published by PalmSource, separated in 2003 from the company Palm (PalmOne since). Initially conceived for PDA (numerical personal assistants) of Palm, Palm OS was adopted per many of other manufacturers:

  • Handspring (separated from Palm then repurchased by PalmOne), for its PDA Visor and its telephones Treo;

  • Sony, for its PDA Clié;
  • IBM, for its PDA Workpad;
  • Qualcomm, for its range of Smartphone;
  • Symbol, for a range of scanner of intelligent code-bars;
  • Tapwave, for a portable game console “Zodiac”;
  • Fossil, for a watch;
  • Garmin, for a GPS;
  • HandEra, for its PDA TRGpro and Handera;
  • Acceca;
  • AlphaSmart;
  • Samsung;
  • GSPda.

One distinguishes now two types of machines, the “traditional” PDA and the hybrid machines PDA+Téléphone called “SmartPhone”. The current version is the 5.2.

End of Palm OS and integration in embarked Linux

Palm OS has just been abandoned by the company which had bought it a few years ago. Access to announced on October 18th, 2006 that the system Palm OS was going to be replaced definitively by Access Linux Platform. The applications Palm OS will be nevertheless compatible because this version of Linux embarked will have a software layer to support the programs Palm OS.
