Palm (brewery)

The brewery Palm is a Brasserie located in the province of the the Flemish Brabant in Belgium, in the commune of Steenhuffel. Official name is Palm Breweries . The brewery is known mainly for the production of Palm.

History

The history of Palm begins in 1597 with the signature of a sale contract of a farm. The files of the commune of Steenhuffel mention the sale contract of a named farm Den Hoorn located opposite the church, along the road leading of Alost to Malines.

It is however necessary to await 1747 to find traces official of an activity brewery with Steenhuffel. A census of the population under the Ancien Mode gives the counting of the number of tradesmen among whom appear two breweries De Hoorn and De Valck . The brewery De Hoorn, property of Jean-Baptiste De Mesmaecker, will develop and become the special brewery Palm.

In 1908 Henriette De Mesmaecker, grand-daughter of Jean-Baptiste De Mesmaecker will marry with Arthur Van Roy. This last will give fresh impulse to the production of beer. In spite of the arrival of the success of the beers Pils it will cling to the manufacture of its traditional beer with high fermentation and thus gives a priority to the continuity and the specificity of its regional beer.

The brewery will be completely destroyed during the First World War. Arthur Van Roy will rebuild it and will increase it immediately. He believes in the success of his traditional beer with high fermentation, even beyond the village borders. In 1929 it re-elects its beer of Steenhuffel in Speciale Palm . Special because of Special Belgian and Palm because of the victory of beer with high fermentation over the increasingly more popular pils.

Dobbel Palm

Each year during December and November the brewery produces the Dobbel Palm . The first appearance of this beer goes back to 1947 at the time of the 200e birthday of the brewery. The Dobbel Palm is distinguished from the Speciale Palm by a malt amber addition during the production. This addition involves a light rise of the percentage of alcohol.
