Palhoça

Palhoça is a city Brésil ienne Littoral of the State of Santa Catarina.

General information

Palhoça is located on the old access road to the town of São Jose and to the capital, Florianópolis, which goes back to the 19th century.

Another access to the city is the trunk road BR-101, Pan-American Highway, recently doubled in direction of north until Joinville. It is about the way of passage of the near total of the goods which forward by the littoral between the State of Rio Grande C Sul and the remainder of the country.

Origin of the name

The name of the city is drawn from the first constructions covered by a roof of palha (straw), called palhoça with the place known as Areas , in the south of the current district of Ponte C Imaruim . Thereafter, other dwellings of fishermen were built around this original core by keeping the same characteristics.

Geography

Palhoça is with a Latitude 27° 38' 42" south and with a Longitude of 48° 40' 04" west, with a Altitude of 3 meters. Its population was estimated at: 128102 inhabitants in 2006. The municipality extends on 395 km ².

Located in the agglomeration of the Large Florianópolis, it is bordering on São Jose, Santo Amaro da Imperatriz and Paulo Lopes, Palhoça is a city with the disordered growth and it misses still certain basic services like a hospital. The local traditions come mainly from the the Azores. In the agglomeration of Florianópolis, it is about the city which knows the fastest growth.

To note that the city comprises one of principal the Mangrove S of South America.

The culminating point of the municipality is the Cambirela, with 1043 m of altitude.

History

Origins

Palhoça was founded in 1793, on the road which connected Lages to Nossa Senhora C Desterro (today Florianópolis), to protect the capital against possible invasions. It depended initially on the town of Desterro, before being attached to São Jose during her creation in 1833. In 1882, it administratively becomes independent while becoming a Freguesia then was high with the row of município with whole share on April 24th 1894, by decree of the colonel Antônio Moreira César.

Development

Of its foundation at 1882, Palhoça lived mainly of production of flour of Manioc and fishing for its population, Desterro and the troops of passage in the area, thus achieving the objective which had governed its creation.

Between 1882 and 1894, year of its apogee, the development of Desterro causes an increase in the demand of products of food and construction materials. The city thus develops its agricultural sector and its fisheries, and launches out in the production of bricks and tiles until becoming the most industrialized city of Santa Catarina. It remains, like front, an important commercial station between the capital and the interior of the State, but with a goods traffic much more important. The products arrived of the mountains and were convoyed by barges until Desterro starting from the various ports of Palhoça.

With the construction of the bridge Hercílio Luz, the production of the interior is directly conveyed with the capital, causing the economic decline of Palhoça. In the Seventies, with the small and average establishment Industry S and the development of the means of transport, the city starts again to develop.

Present

Today, it turns to the Tourisme and the development of its natural resources, in particular its Mangrove S and its Atlantic Forêt (70% of the surface of the municipality), protected by the natural park from the Serra C Tabuleiro . Palhoça preserves until today the traditions, costumes and architecture left in heritages by its colonizers, mainly of Portuguese origin , from the Azores, German Italy and . Lastly, another aspect marking of Palhoça is its Artisanat, in particular the indigenous craft industry. One finds in addition still in the municipality of the Engenho S and of the Alambique S producing artisanalement farinha and Cachaça .

The city comprises a club of Football evolving/moving into 1 division in the championship of Santa Catarina, the Sociedade Esportiva, Recreativa E Cultural Guarani.
