Palate of the Art schools of Lille

The palate of the Art schools of Lille is one of the largest museums of France, and the largest museum of province.

It among the first museums of France, was built under the impulse of Vulgarisation of the Art undertaken by Napoleon I {{er}} at the beginning of the century: The decree Chaptal of 1801 then indicates fifteen French cities (of which Lille) to receive the works seized in the churches and the occupied countries. The painters Louis Joseph Watteau and François Watteau, known like the " Watteau de Lille" , are very implied in the beginnings of the museum. Louis Joseph Watteau carries out in 1795 the first inventory of the paintings confiscated during the French revolution. His/her son, François Watteau will be the assistant conservative of 1808 until 1823.

Initially, it occupies the unused church of Récollets , the museum being inaugurated in 1809, then the buildings of the town hall. The construction of the new museum begins in 1885 under the impulse from Géry Legrand, mayor of Lille, to be completed in 1892. The Parisian architects Bérard and Delmas are selected to complete work. Located in downtown area, the palate, of architecture style Belle Time, located places Republic, vis-a-vis the Préfecture of Lille. At the beginning of the Years 1990, its state of outdatedness combined on arrival and the installation in Lille of the plans in relief of the cities strengthened by Vauban push the city to engage its restoration as of 1991. Work is entrusted to the architects Jean-Marc Ibos and Myrto Vitart. It is reopened with the public in 1997. This restoration made it possible to create a new room of 700 m ² intended for exposed temporary in basement as well as the departments of the plan in relief and the sculpture of the 19th century.

It shelters from now on on more than 22.000 M ², the second larger collection of works of France (sculptures, paintings, drawings, ceramics…) after that of the Louvre. This collection includes/understands in particular works of Raphaël, Donatello, Van Dyck, Tissot, Jordaens, Rembrandt, Goya, Greco, David, Corot, Courbet, Toulouse-Lautrec, Delacroix, Rubens, Rodin, Claudel, Jean-Baptiste Chardin, as well as the plans in relief of several cities strengthened in the neighborhoods of Lille by Vauban.
