History

The city of Palate-on-Vienna draws its name from the Palate of Jocondiac.

In the night from May 8th to 9th 1943, Georges Guingouin succeeds, with the danger of its life, to make jump the factory of rubber, very important for the saving in German war. Indeed there existed in France only 2 rubber factories, one in Palate-on-Vienna the other with Colombes. By three times, April 6th, 29th and 30th 1943, RAF had bombarded the factory of Colombes. Alas, the population had been seriously reached and the marshal Pétain, with the radio, had skilfully exploited this situation: “they are still deaths, casualties, destroyed hearths”. Conscious of this disastrous repercussion, the allied High-State-Major had asked for the movement “Combat” to destroy by the explosive the factory of the Palate, but that had not been possible. Informed, Georges Guingouin, in spite of the difficulties of displacement since its base in forest of Châteauneuf, distant on 45 km, decided to make the operation. Accompanied by Rene Duval which had gone voluntary, in the night of May 9th, 1943, it made jump two boilers. The stop of this factory for 5 months will make lose with the Germans 1.500 tons of rubber. But to the return in their camp the two men of the maquis will fall into a Embuscade from the gendarmerie and it will be necessary little of them that they do not lose the life there.
